Real Madrid scored twice in extra-time to beat rivals Atletico Madrid 5-3 and make the final of the Spanish Super Cup. A thriller in Saudi Arabia looked destined for penalties after normal time ended in a 3-3 draw – but a Stefan Savic own goal and stoppage-time effort by Brahim Diaz proved the difference. Real will meet either Barcelona or Osasuna in the final.

Real Madrid reached the final of the Spanish Super Cup after beating Atletico Madrid 5-3 after extra-time in a breathless Madrid derby in Saudi Arabia.
The first semi-final of the Super Cup delivered entertainment in spades in front of a lively crowd in Riyadh, with the game played at a relentless pace until the two teams tired in the additional half hour.
Set-piece headers from Mario Hermoso and Antonio Rudiger were followed by a clever Ferland Mendy flicked finish and a fine solo strike from Antoine Griezmann, who became Atleti’s all-time record scorer, as the teams went in 2-2 at half-time.
A mistake from Real goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga led to an own goal from Rudiger that looked to have won it for Atletico in normal time, only for Dani Carvajal to score late on after a move that had seen Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham both brilliantly denied in the box.
And it was Real, having looked the better team for much of the night, who won it in extra-time, with a looping Stefan Savic own goal followed by a dramatic final-second fifth as Brahim Diaz outpaced Jan Oblak, who had come up for a corner, to race onto a hoofed clearance and finish from just inside the Atletico half.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will now face either Barcelona or Osasuna in Sunday’s final at the same ground in the Saudi Arabian capital.

Talking Point – Riyadh crowd rise to recognise Madrid’s best

Any fears that the Saudi Arabian home for this match would prevent a high-octane derby game were dispelled early on, with both teams going full throttle from the first whistle, naming strong XIs and playing the game with the level of the intensity that you’d expect in a league match.
And the players were quick to whip up the crowd too, with Real Madrid’s players gesturing to the fans for more noise throughout the first 15 minutes, with the Saudi crowd responding willingly.
It made for a terrific atmosphere in a match that felt like it could have been in Madrid, rather than thousands of miles away on the outskirts of Riyadh.

Player Of The Match – Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

Real full-back Carvajal was outstanding, making some crucial defensive contributions when required and offering plenty of attacking threat when he got forward. His finish for the equaliser that sent the game to extra-time was brilliant, and it was his excellent cross that was flicked home by Mendy for Real Madrid’s second. So much of what Real did well came from their right-back.

Match Highlights

7' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 0-1 ATLETICO MADRID (HERMOSO)
Kepa makes an excellent save to turn the ball around the post for a corner, but Atletico open the scoring from that set-piece, with nobody getting close enough to stop Hermoso climbing highest and sending a well-directed header into the back of the net. 1-0 Atletico.
20' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 1-1 ATLETICO MADRID (RUDIGER)
Rudiger gets his head onto the corner and sends a free header past Oblak. That’s a set-piece goal apiece and it’s 1-1.
29' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 2-1 ATLETICO MADRID (MENDY)
That is a great goal and the roof almost comes off the Al-Awwal Stadium. Real Madrid work the ball wide to Carvajal, whose low ball in is superbly flicked on by Mendy and beyond Oblak before he can react. 2-1!
37' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 2-2 ATLETICO MADRID (GRIEZMANN)
Wow. What a goal, and what a game. Atletico are back level and it’s the best goal of the night (so far). He picks up the ball outside the box and cuts back onto his right foot, leaving Modric and Rudiger trailing in his wake, before sending a rocket of a shot into the bottom corner from range. That’s sensational. 2-2.
78' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 2-3 ATLETICO MADRID (OWN GOAL)
Atletico celebrate as the ball finds the back of the net after a calamitous attempted clearance from Kepa. He is challenged in the air by Morata, which will be checked, but Kepa’s clearance came off Rudiger and into the back of the net as the pair scrambled in vain to keep it out.
85' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 3-3 ATLETICO MADRID (CARVAJAL)
The equaliser comes and the crowd erupt. Vinicius gets outside his man on the left and forces a great save from Oblak. Bellingham is brilliantly denied twice on the follow-up, with Hermoso’s goal-line clearance from his second effort being particularly impressive, but Real Madrid convert at the fourth attempt as Carvajal latches onto the loose ball and fires it into the top corner. 3-3!
116' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 4-3 ATLETICO MADRID (OWN GOAL)
A deep cross comes into the Atletico box is aimed towards Joselu, who gets a slight touch onto the foot of the covering defender Savic. The ball loops over Oblak and into the back of the net as Joselu wheels away to celebrate a goal that will certainly not go down with his name next to it.
120' - GOAL! REAL MADRID 5-3 ATLETICO MADRID (DIAZ)
Wow. Real Madrid have won it. Oblak comes up for another corner and races back to try and get onto a long hoofed clearance, but Brahim Diaz is too quick, overtakes the backtracking keeper and shoots into an empty net from just inside the Atletico half.
