Casemiro’s 89th minute winner gave Manchester United a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest at the CIty Ground in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

After their disappointing defeat to Fulham at the weekend, Manchester United were looking to stay in the hunt for their last remaining chance of a trophy this season, while Forest would have hoped to continue their good run under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Antony hit the woodwork early, and Scott McTominay had two good chances, while Taiwo Awoniyi looked dangerous as Forest threatened on the break.

Both sides created chances in the second half but neither side had a cutting edge with the goalkeepers up to the task, and extra time loomed with a result needed to decide which team would face Liverpool in the next round.

For both teams they would not have wanted an extra half hour as United prepare for the Manchester derby and Forest are scheduled to host Liverpool this weekend.

It was United who forced the result when captain Bruno Fernandes’ dangerous cross was glanced in by Casemiro’s header for the winner.

Some mild childing from the two sides as tempers flare ahead of a United corner. Felipe grabs Fernandes by the neck, and Fernandes slaps his hands away for his trouble. There's a VAR check now, but nothing comes of it.

A low, curling free kick from the left is met by Casemiro's header and he gets it past Turner to put the home side ahead.

The midfielder lashes in a volley from the edge of the box, and Onana meets it with an acrobatic save, but the offside is then flagged and Untited can build from the back. Mainoo and Evans get ready on the sidelines.

He curls in a shot from far out, and it's far too high. The quality of shooting and chances tonight has not been great.

Down the inside left, closing in on goal, and from a tight angle he flashes the ball wide of the near post with his left foot.

Fernandes swings in a corner from the left, but it fails to clear the near post and United retreat. Onana comes up to boot the ball into the box and to Turner.

And Origi is off.

He pounces to his right to hit a well-struck effort from Murillo, but it was low and down the middle.

He barges down Elanga before he is into the box.

His effort is deflected, and it loops up to the right side of the box, and Amad's volley spins wide.

Antony is off.

Perhaps the best chance of the game, certainly of the half, for United, as Fernandes has space to shoot from the edge of the box and he trundles an effort at goal. Toffolo is down injured.

Fernandes has defenders standing off him, but a narrow window to aim through, and his bouncing shot is easily saved.

Some quick passing again brings space, and Fernandes sidefoots a shot at goal that is going to be saved by Turner. McTominay attempts to deflect it the other way, but instead puts it out for a goal kick.

After some quick passing with Antony on the edge of the box, Fernandes attempts a trivela that goes a couple of yards over.
