Well, that was rather impressive from Spain. They have inflicted a heaviest ever defeat on Croatia who just couldn't cope with the home side. Lucho will be delighted with what he saw from his young players. They have two wins from two to start their Nations League campaign.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Spain 6-0 Croatia
There have been so many standout performers for Spain this evening, but Asensio has to be the man of the match. He assisted THREE times and also scored one himself. Wow.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
This is a statement win and performance from Spain. Questions have been asked of them following the fiasco that was the 2018 World Cup, but they remain one of the very best.
ISCOOOOOOOOO! The Spain playmaker will believe that he should have done better with that. He arrived late on the scene to get on the end of a cross, but scuffed his shot straight at Kalinic.
The new talent coming through into the Spain set up is frightening. They have so much depth in quality. They could field a second side that would be among the best in international football.
It's clear that Rodrigo is desperate to add another goal to his name here. The striker's record for the national team is impressive and this is a chance to fill his boots against a Croatian side that has given up.
ANOTHER RODRIGO CHANCE! The Valencia forward was on his own, breaking the Croatian offside trap. His left-footed effort from a tight angle picks up a deflection on its way wide.
Here's a stat for you - so Spain's exit to Russia at the World Cup officially went down as a draw. Which means that the last match Spain lost was actually all the way back at Euro 2016.
Everything is going against Croatia here. Mitrovic believes that he was pushed as he tried to shield the ball out for a goal kick. But it bounces off him and goes behind for a corner.
While Spain have been exceptional this evening, Croatia gave up this game as a contest a long time ago. There's no sign of the pressing game we saw from them in the first half.
RODRIGO OVER! That could have been a seventh goal for Spain, with Rodrigo taking aim from just inside the box. He curled his foot around the ball, but it flashes wide over the target.
- OffDani CarvajalSpain
- OnCésar AzpilicuetaSpain
One last change for Spain and it's Azpilicueta who comes on for Carvajal.
Croatia aren't a team that concedes a lot of goals. They conceded only four goals over the course of their entire World Cup qualification campaign, but they have lost six here.
This performance and scoreline from Spain is all the more remarkable when you casr your mind back to the start of the first half, when Croatia had a number of chances to take the lead.
- OffIvan SantiniCroatia
- OnMarko LivajaCroatia
Santini comes off for Croatia. He missed one golden chance in the first half... and then nothing.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Spain 6 (70 mins - Isco) Croatia 0. It's six and it's another exceptional goal from Spain! This time it's Isco who finds the back of the net, setting himself up for a right footed shot inside the box and cutting a finish into the far corner. This is incredible.
You don't like to question the commitment of a team that reached the final of the World Cup just a few weeks ago, but it almost looks like Croatia have given up the ghost here.
It's fair to say that Modric has really struggled to make an impression in this match this evening. The Croatian is a contender for this year's Ballon d'Or, but he's been a spectator tonight.
Saul comes off to a standing ovation from his hometown crowd. What a performance.
Ramos is enjoying himself with the cross-field, diagonal passes from deep this evening. He pinged one to Carvajal in the build up to the opening goal and he has played at leats five of them over the course of the match.
- OffMarcelo BrozovicCroatia
- OnMarko PjacaCroatia
Now a change for Croatia and off comes Brozovic to be replaced by Pjaca.
Croatia have had the stuffing knocked from them. They started the match playing at a very high tempo, pressing high on Spain, but this has become about damage limitation.
The 'Oles' are now ringing around the stadium in Elche. This is complete and utter dominance from Spain. They really could finish with a few more goals here. They look dangerous.
- OffSergio BusquetsSpain
The first change of the match and Busquets is taken off for Rodri.
So just to sum up - Spain are 5-0 up against the World Cup runners-up and there's still over 30 minutes of this second half still to be played. This really could be a total mauling.
- GoalSergio RamosSpain
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Spain 5 (56 mins - Sergio Ramos) Croatia 0. Croatia are being battered here! Spain have a FIFTH goal! Ramos lost his marker and gets on the end of a corner kick delivery, directing a header into the far corner of the net. How many will Spain finish on here?
Croatia don't know what has hit them here. They have no response to what Spain are throwing at them at this moment. The home side could make this quite humiliating for Croatia.
GOOD SAVE! Kalinic makes the save to deny Busquets. The Barcelona midfielder might have got more on that. He was only a few yards out from the Croatian goal. Good opportunity.
Gaya gets an early cross in for Rodrigo to get on the end of, but the flag was up against the left back. That was unfortunate because the ball from Gaya was excellent.
This has been a massive performance from Spain this evening. This just backs up the view held by many that they should have been the frontrunners for the World Cup in the summer.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Spain 4 (49 mins - Rodrigo) Croatia 0. It's a fourth goal for Spain and Rodrigo has added his name to the score sheet! The Valencia forward was played in behind the Croatia defence, with Mitrovic keeping him on, and made no mistake in finishing low past Kalinic.
How will Spain approah this second half? Will they attempt to pass it out, or will they go for the throat? You get the feeling that if they really wanted to they could score another couple.
Spain were exceptional in the second part of the first half. Croatia just couldn't cope with their attacking potency. Asensio in particular was fantastic, scoring one and forcing another.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way in Elche! Spain are 3-0 up over Croatia.
What did you make of the first half in Elche? Is there any way back for Croatia from this? What have Spain done so well? Should they have won the World Cup? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Spain 3-0 Croatia. What a first half performance that was from the home side. Asensio has been the star man for Spain. Two wonderful goals from the Real Madrid man.
Croatia started this match so well, they were pressing high and forcing Spain into mistakes. They will be a bit bamboozled by what has happened in the last 15 minutes or so.
First thing he's done wrong all night! Spain win the freekick right on the edge of the Croatia penalty area, but Asensio blasts his effort well over the bar. Kalinic wasn't worried by that.
One wonders what might have happened had Lopetegui stayed as the Spain manager for the World Cup. They were so good in qualifying. It al fell apart on the eve of the tournament.
Lovely little backheel turn from Saul to create space for himself in the centre of the pitch when he was under pressure from two Croatian players. What a player he is. Fantastic.
Well, well, well. What a display this has been from Spain in this first half. Keep in mind that this is the World Cup runners-up that they are ripping apart almost at will. Impressive.
- Own-goalLovre KalinicCroatia
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Spain 3 (35 mins - Marco Asensio) Croatia 0. Another stunner and it's a second for Asensio and a third for Spain! It might actually go down as an own goal, as Asensio's strike from distance comes off the bar and back off the head of Kalinic and into the net. Wow!
They started sluggishly, but Spain have really found their groove now. Croatia are being ripped apart by the home side. It looks like they could score at least another before half time!
- GoalMarco AsensioSpain
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Spain 2 (33 mins - Marco Asensio) Croatia 0. Thunderous strike! What a goal from Asensio. Croatia gave up the ball inside their own half, with Asensio shooting from 20 yards out. It swerves left and then right and finds the back of the net! Magnificent technique!
What is interesting about Lucho's team and squad selection as a whole is that he hasn't picked as many of his former Barcelona players as some might have predicted. Only Busquets tonight.
The biggest surprise in Lucho's first squad as Spain's new manager was the omission of Alba. He has been Spain's left back for years and is in good form! But there was no place for him.
The home crowd in Elche believe that Kovacic fouled Asensio over in the corner flag, but the referee believes that the Chelsea midfielder, who is on loan from Real Madrid, won the ball fairly.
Spain have seen plenty of the ball in the opening half hour here, but rather strangely, Isco hasn't really got himself involved in the match. It was been a quiet performance from him so far.
Croatia are still having some joy in getting in behind the Spain backline on the counter attack. They are just lacking that final product, as demonstrated by Perisic scooping a cross behind there.
People always talk about Saul's future, and it's true that he is going to be a star for years to come. But he's a star right now! He's becoming a key figure for both club and country!
That's the first real chance that Spain have created in this match, but they made it count. Saul has earned a reputation for himself as a goalscorer on the big occasion. Another big goal.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Spain 1 (24 mins - Saul Niguez) Croatia 0. What a goal and it's Saul who grabs it on his homecoming to Elche! The cross from Carvajal was sensational and Saul rises highest to power home a header into the back of the net! Exceptional from the midfielder!
Spain haven't quite got going yet. There have been glimpses of their quality, but the home side are struggling to get to grips with the pressing game from the Croatians.
- OffŠime VrsaljkoCroatia
- OnMarko RogCroatia
Rog comes on to replace the injured Vrsaljko for the away side.
This is a blow for Croatia. Vrsaljko is one of their best, and most important, players. He gives them so much width on the right side, as shown in the chance he created for Santini.
VRSALJKO INJURY? It looks like the former Atletico Madrid right back's evening could be over. Is it an ankle problem for Vrsaljko? Croatia are going to have to make the change.
WHAT A TACKLE! That looked like being the opening goal for Croatia, with Perisic clean through. But somehow Carvajal got across to make the last-ditch block on the slide!
Rodrigo is the man who has been trusted to lead the line by Lucho this evening. Costa isn't in the Spain squad for personal reasons, and so the Valencia man is leading the line.
CHANCE FOR RODRIGO! Now it's an opportunity for Spain, with Rodrigo getting across his man to get on the end of a cross. But his flicked effort is saved in the Croatian goal by Kalinic.
SANTINI SHOULD SCORE! That should have been the opening goal for Croatia. Vrsaljko's cross found Santini at the near post, but with De Gea off his line he shoots inches wide of the near post.
- Yellow cardIvan SantiniCroatia
Santini gets in trouble for an arm in the face of Nacho and sees yellow.
There's a debut for Ceballos this evening. This will be a big season for the young midfielder. He has to make more of an impression for Real Madrid. He didn't get much game time last season.
That's a few times that Spain have given up the ball cheaply inside their own half. This time it's De Gea who presents Croatia with possession. The hosts haven't hit their stride yet.
That was very unlike Busquets, giving up the ball so cheaply so close to his own goal, but it was a result of the high pressing game that Croatia are employing early on here.
CROATIA CLOSE! That could have been the opening goal. Busquets gives up the ball on the edge of his own box, Rakitic curls a shot towards the far corner, but puts it just wide.
PERISIC CHANCE! Croatia were on the front foot there. Perisic had the run on Carvajal after a long pass down the line. But the Spain right back still managed to get the tackle in.
Both teams are actually quite similar in the way they like to play football. Spain and Croatia are best when they have the ball at their feet. They also like to press high up the pitch.
Ramos is the captain for Spain this evening. He is one of the stalwarts who remained after the World Cup, with Pique, Iniesta and Silva all retiring from the national team in the summer.
- 1st Half
We are under way in Elche! It's Spain against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League!
Rakitic is earning his 100th cap this evening and is receiving a shirt and plaque on the pitch ahead of kick off.
Looks like a good playing surface in Elche for this match. That will suit both sides.
The two sets of players are lined up in the tunnel ready to go here. This should be a good one.
Spain got their UEFA Nations League campaign off to a good start by beating England at Wembley last week. That was Lucho's first game in charge of the national team after the summer fiasco.
Further down the footballing ladder, the UEFA Nations League has already been a success. But for countries like Spain and Croatia, where Euros qualification is already all but guaranteed, what will it mean?
Strong side! The World Cup runners-up have picked a good team for this game, but they are missing Mandzukic up front and there's no sign of Lovren at the back either.
Interesting! A few bold picks from Lucho for tonight's game. Saul starts again, with Gaya in at left back and Ceballos in from the start. All six Real Madrid players in the squad start!
