Manchester United came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in their first leg with Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday's UEFA Women's Champions League second round qualifier.
A full crowd was in place at Leigh Sports Village to witness United’s first-ever Champions League game, as substitute Melvine Malard's header cancelled out Tabitha Chawinga's opener.
Marc Skinner’s side had to weather a storm in the first half as PSG dominated but failed to find an opener despite creating a host of opportunities.
Chawinga fired an early warning shot after just 120 seconds and United needed a desperate goal-line clearance from Katie Zelem to stay level.
Mary Earps was soon called into action when Sandy Baltimore was released with the United goalkeeper beating the shot away.
The chances kept coming for the visitors as Lieke Martens failed to hit the target from Chawinga’s cross.
An injury to midfielder Oriane Jean-Francois failed to slow PSG down and they were left cursing their luck when Mertens headed wide after Earps kept out Baltimore’s effort.
Aided by the introduction of Geyse, United made a bright start to the second half. However, they found themselves trailing nine minutes after the restart when Chawinga capitalised on some slack defending to give PSG a deserved lead.
The Parisiens survived a scare when United went close to levelling from a corner with Marie-Antoinette Katoto scrambling off the line. But the hosts were growing in confidence and their perseverance was almost rewarded when Leah Galton hit the side-netting.
United finally restored parity in the 70th minute when Malard, on loan from Lyon, headed in from point-blank range after PSG failed to clear a corner.
Now with the momentum, Skinner’s side pushed for the winner and they could have had a penalty when Geyse went down inside the box only for the referee to ignore their appeals, before Millie Turner had an effort headed off the line.
The teams face off next Wednesday again and United will be confident of progressing in Paris if they can repeat their second-half performance.
