Scotland rallied late on and almost produced a rousing comeback but Japan hold on for a big win which gets their campaign started after they drew a blank against Argentina.

Far from looking to defend what they have, Japan are going for a goal which would seal the victory, with Alexander forced to make a fine stop from Sugita.

GOAL!

Scotland's pressure has paid off! Ichise plays a terrible ball under no pressure straight to Clelland, who goes for goal and finds the back of the net from the edge of the box. Scotland are back in it!

Terrible, terrible decision.

Cuthbert brings the ball under control in the box but is under close attention from Shimizu, who appears to punch the ball away. Somehow the referee is unmoved and declines the opportunity to double-check her decision on VAR. Baffling.

Evans takes a dip from distance this time but Yamashita gets two solid hands behind it to make a routine save.

Shimizu has an effort from way, way out which flies over the bar.

Penalty shout for Scotland!

Cuthbert goes down under a challenge from Ichise and is appealing for a spot kick. The referee is unimpressed, however, and on viewing the replay, it appears to have been a good tackle.

So close!

Off the post! Weir sends in a free kick which Beattie nods down at the far post. Cuthbert sticks out a boot and sends the ball against the woodwork. Was that Scotland's best chance of getting back into the box?

Ichise again!

A poor pass out of the back allows Scotland to work the ball to Cuthbert, who shoots Ichise is there to make another fine goal-saving challenge.

Yamashita comes charging out of her goal to deal with an overhit cross from the Scotland left but her decision was a good one and she helps deal with the danger.

We've had our first change of the day, with Arnot withdrawn.

What a save!

Nakajima skips inside from the right and lets fly with a wonderful left-footed effort which looks destined to nestle in the bottom corner but Alexander gets down low to her right to parry it behind.

What a tackle!

Little dribbles well towards the box and looks to feed Evans but Ichise gets across to remove the danger with a superb challenge.

Chance!

The corner comes in from the right to Kumagai, who can't get enough on it and the ball goes harmlessly behind for a goalkick.

There's yet more lax defending from Scotland and the ball almost falls to Sugasawa, but Beattie gets across to make a fine tackle and put it behind for a corner.

Weir looks to test Yamashita from distance but the effort is very tame and gathered easily. Scotland have had three efforts of note, all from way out.

This has been all Japan so far. They've not created anything yet but the omens are bad for Scotland.
