Southgate said this was a night for the experience of someone like Wayne Rooney. Will his captain reward such faith? The United forward would love a repeat of when he scored two goals from just three shots in England’s 3-1 win over Scotland in November 2014 at Celtic Park.

The last time that England and Scotland met in a competitive fixture was back in November 1999 at Wembley Stadium. Scotland prevailed 1-0 thanks to a goal from Don Hutchison, but lost the Euro 2000 playoff tie 1-2 on aggregate. Paul Scholes grabbed a brace in the first leg at Hampden Park.

Gareth Southgate refuses to view this match as an audition: "I don’t view any game in that way. I have leadership responsibilities, of course, for the team and on a broader level, but the game is not about me. Football is about those who play and pay and that is about right so, 100 per cent, my focus is on the match. It would be irresponsible and unprofessional for it to be any other way."
