That's the end of the session and it is Fernando Alonso who tops the timesheets from Button, Grosjean, Vettel, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Maldonado, Perez, Kobayashi and Hulkenberg.

The yellow flags are withdrawn and Button goes second with a 1:32.320s on hard tyres and Vettel into fourth.

Hydraulics issue for Rosberg who is down in 16th and not on the track.

Pic stops again on the track but this time not on the racing line so no red flag. Why on two occasions he has not pulled onto the grass, only he knows.

Kobayashi was threatening Alonso's time but spins late in the lap as Raikkonen moves into third.

Perez off again at Becketts and he knocks off the front wing in the process.

Hamilton goes third in the McLaren with 1:32.560s behind Alonso and Grosjean. Maldonado into fourth.

There is a chance of a shower right at the end of this session as Button goes out.

Alonso spins sideways, coming out of the final corner, and does a three-point turn before returning to normal service.

The sun has come out at Silverstone and the track temperature has risen to 23C as Grosjean moves to the top of the times with 1:32.471s on hard tyres.

But Perez is now third on the harder tyres with Romain Grosjean 0.282s back in fourth in the Lotus.

Many teams running opposite tyre strategies on their cars to get some data but it is those on the softs who are setting the pace and Hamilton back into top spot with a 1:32.728s lap.

Schumacher goes off track at the final corner as Raikkonen improves his time.

Button now top with a 1:32.851s lap ahead of Hamilton. Alonso takes third in 1:33.271s despite a wobble at Becketts followed by Raikkonen who clocks a 1:33.334.

A fuel system issue was the reason for Pic's forced halt.

The sun is back out as Button resumes on softs with Alonso on hard rubber.

The marshals push Pic's car down the track and through a gap in the wall and the session re-starts.
