A time of 1:35.766 is good enough for pole position. Hamilton appeared to throw it away, having led for some time. Why did he let his teammate pass?

An excellent final lap from Vettel, who initially crosses the line with the fastest time of the day, only for Rosberg to go even faster. Nico Rosberg is on pole for the British Grand Prix.

Rosberg, looking to oust his teammate in these final stages, gets on the radio to tell his Mercedes team that "Lewis needs to speed up."
2'
Ricciardo has stood out of his car and won't set another timed lap. Vettel, who still hasn't clocked a time, is on the track and will have time for a hot lap.
3'
With a little under three minutes remaining, Button makes his way back out onto the track. The Brit will attempt to improve upon his seventh place.

In fact, the rain looks to be getting worse. The track has lost that typically grey look, and is now looking rather dark. Vettel is yet to register a time in Q3. He has just over 3 minutes to get out there.
5'
Quite a bizarre decision from Vettel there. His team have instructed him to go back out in a few minutes as they believe the rain has stopped. It most certainly has not.
6'
Vettel is down in tenth at the moment, currently going through the rainy section of the track, but the German aborts the lap and pits.
7'
Hamilton goes fastest. The Mercedes driver clocks a 1:39.232, with his teammate coming in a close second. Provisional pole for the Brit.
9'
The track continues to get wetter and wetter. The qualifying times may all be about the here and now. This next few minutes may determine how the drivers line up tomorrow.

Fernando Alonso, who will start tomorrow in 19th, spoke about his disappointing qualifying session. He told the BBC: "It happens sometimes in this weather, 30 second before or later, you put the right tyre on and you are the hero or you have made a mistake. We are here in the TV compound, two Ferrari drivers and two Williams drivers, it's something we did wrong compared to other teams. We need to study what happened."
11'
Ricciardo has been instructed to stay away from the limiter in the 3rd and 4th gear as the car is losing performance. How will that affect his chances of getting on the grid?
12'
Q3 under way. Ten cars to battle it out for pole position. Red Bull's reigning world champion Vettel is out first.

Hamilton fastest in Q2, then. Those to miss out are: Grosjean, Bianchi, Chilton, Gutierrez, Maldonado and Sutil.

The chance of a first Q3 appearance for Marussia is over, with the two drivers in the drop zone. They won't improve upon their respective lap times now.
1'
Hamilton goes fastest with just over a minute to go. 1:35.000. Gutierrez's Sauber has span off the track and goes into the barriers. That could cause some problems for those yet to clock their final lap.
2'
Those that have gone out early on slicks will have time to come in and change their tyres. The leaderboard will surely all change in these final few minutes.
3'
Grosjean has a strange problem. He’s in the pits and his rear axel is spinning – something of which he can’t stop.
7'
Nico Rosberg has come into the pits to change over onto the slicks. We'll see how that goes. Vettel now comes in to do the same.
9'
Lotus' Maldonado and Grosjean are looking very good out on track. The pair have been keeping pace with those at the top of the leaderboard.
