So, Fernando Alonso heads the pack after FP3 in Shanghai with a time of 1m35.391s, ahead of Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.

Vettel sets two PBs in the first two sectors, but it's not good enough to trouble the Ferraris. Nevertheless he slots in fourth with a 1m36.286s and is just over one tenth ahead of team-mate Webber.

Lewis Hamilton's race engineer on team radio: "Lewis, we'd like to push these tyres for each lap to see the progression. We don't need to save them."

Webber moves into fourth. Meanwhile Vettel is out there too.

Rosberg's problem was a hydraulics one and he won't get back out this session.

Massa gets through a bit of traffic to set a new benchmark but his Ferrari team-mate Alonso soon betters him with a 1m35.391s on new softs.

Plenty of action now as soft tyres are worked over. Sutil goes second, Ricciardo goes fourth.

Rosberg looks desperate to get back out on track, as his mechanics bust a gut to sort his car out.

Raikkonen looks like he's going to challenge Hamilton's time after a quick first sector but he can't maintain that pace and the Finn slots into second with a 1m36.605s, five tenths of the Mercedes man.

Ferrari on Twitter: ‏"After six laps Felipe is back in the pits to finalise car set-up for his second run. Best time of 1:38.099 and P6."

No such problems for Rosberg's team-mate Hamilton though and the Brit lowers the benchmark further with a lap of 1m36.065s.

Yellow flags are out after Hulkenberg had a moment off track to avoid Gutierrez, who was going slow.

But Vettel re-emerges from the Red Bull garage for another run still on his medium compounds.

Not a great deal of improvement at the moment as rubber is worn down.
