So, Vettel finishes the opening practice session on top of the timesheets, followed by Button and then Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, Rosberg, Massa, Schumacher, Ricciardo and Raikkonen.

Button follows Vettel in breaking the 27-second barrier, posting a 1m27. 929s to move into second.

Grip on the track is still improving, as the improved times are showing as this session nears a close.

Vettel improve again on his next lap to 1m27.619s.

Button loses time in the middle sector though and he won't trouble Vettel. The Briton stays in fourth.

Both McLarens are out for a final lap... and Button looks quick through the first sector.

Vettel is flying round and looks like he's going to improve further, but he errors on the penultimate corner and cannot go any quicker than his previous benchmark.

The Ferrari of Massa has also undergone some changes - aerodynamically - and he's out to test them.

Vettel's ever-so-slightly faster than Hamilton in second, with Alonso third now and webber in fourth.

The tweaks to Vettel's front suspension in the garage pays off as he goes top with a time of 1m28.036s.

Webber and Vettel, having been displaced at the top of the standings are back out for another run.

Alonso claims top spot but his reign is short-lived as Hamilton takes over at the top of the shop with a 1m28.046s.

Vettel heads back to the pits after that advice from his team. The German's in P2.

Lewis Hamilton clocks a 1m28.765s to go P3.

"Back off, too many cars ahead", Vettel is told on Red Bull radio.

Caterham test driver Alexander Rossi will drive for the outfit's GP2 team in both post-season tests this winter.

Webber further improves to 1m28.229s to extend his advantage over Alonso.
