Three-time champion Tiger Woods will miss the 2023 Open Championship due to ankle surgery recovery

Tiger Woods will not be fit enough to play at the Open Championship in Hoylake this July, after he failed to sufficiently recover from ankle surgery. The veteran - who has won the competition three times - has struggled with his right leg for many years, and while his hopes of recovering in time were already believed to be slim, it has been confirmed that he will not take part this year.

Tiger Woods will not compete at the Open Championship in Liverpool next month after he failed to recover from ankle surgery in time.

Woods underwent surgery in April which had led to speculation that he would not take part in the tournament at Royal Liverpool.

Woods has won the tournament three times before, including once in Hoylake.

"We have been advised that he won’t be playing at Hoylake," said a spokesman for R&A via email, reported Sports Illustrated. "We wish Tiger all the best with his recovery."

Woods has 15 majors to his name but has been a notable absentee for much of the last few years after a string of serious and niggling injuries.

Woods has serial difficulties with his right leg, ankle and foot, and in February 2021 a severe car crash led to suggestions that he was lucky not to lose his leg.

He had a subtalar fusion on his right ankle in April in order to treat arthritis arising from an older fracture. With an expected recovery of three months, his chances of competing were slim, and he will now have to return in a different event.

He has been fit enough to compete at the Masters, PGA Championship and Open in 2022 but has played just nine official rounds after making the cut at the first two. In February he appeared at the Genesis Invitational, and also competed at the Masters, and made the cut in both tournaments.

During the Masters he was struggling with a limp and his surgery followed shortly afterwards.
