Veteran Maverick Vinales found himself down in eighth, just ahead of Johann Zarco on his Prima Pramac, where he will hope to make his traditional improvements during the race and close in on Brad Binder in fourth spot in the championship standings for the current season.
The riders battled in wet conditions as Britain’s poor summer continued, with light rain and track temperatures of 12 degrees.
The Sprint Race is to go ahead later on Saturday afternoon ahead of the race proper on Sunday.
Bagnaia currently leads Jorge Martin (who qualified seventh) with 194 points compared to his opponent’s 159, with Bezzecchi a point behind the Spaniard.
