Tyrone Green: Harlequins ‘lucky’ to fight off Bath comeback and clinch win - ‘Almost came back to bite us’

Tyrone Green feels Harlequins were fortunate to pick up a win against Bath in the Gallagher Premiership on Saturday, despite leading by six tries at one point in the match.

In front 33-3 at the break, Harlequins added another try to their resounding lead in the early stages of the second period, but Johann van Graan’s side surged into action to mount an inspired fightback.

Tries from Will Muir, Alfie Barbeary, Louis Schreuder, Ruaridh McConnochie and Elliott Stooke pulled the visitors back into contention, but Harlequins held on to record a much-needed victory.

Harlequins’ Green admitted his side were “lucky” to pick up five points in a 40-36 win.

“It wasn’t our second half,” he told TNT Sports. “A great start to the game in the first half, but we switched off in the second half and it almost came back to bite us. We’re happy to get the result in the end.

“We know that we let them off in that second half. We can’t do that in big games, like I said, today it almost came back to bite us.

“It’s something we have to look at, we’re probably not too concerned, we know we switched off but we were lucky to get five points when they were so close to coming back.”

Harlequins went into the match off the back of a 52-7 hammering from Saracens last week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Green said it was important to bounce back in the right way.

“We know that last week, we weren’t at our best, we were really bad,” Green said.

“We needed to show what we can do and the boys really pitched up, were physically there today and that first half showed where we want to be and what we can achieve.

“We just need to maintain it now.”

Quins can look forward to an Investec Champions Cup tie with Glasgow Warriors next, and Green said his Harlequins side must show more of what they managed in the first half on Saturday.

“We know what we want to achieve in both competitions, so for us, it’s building off this,” he said.

“[Playing well] for 80 minutes not 40 minutes and if we can get that performance we know we can get the result we want.”

Harlequins are fourth in the Premiership standings and currently occupy the final play-off spot with four matches to play.
