Ireland v Scotland LIVE: Knockout place on the line in much-awaited clash

Ireland have been a top, top side for a few years now, but this was a huge test of their World Cup credentials, and they passed with flying colours.

Scotland have had plenty of the ball tonight and have tried some decent things, but they just haven’t been able to convert opportunities into meaningful contributions (until the last few minutes at least). Some of the credit must go to the brilliance of Ireland’s defensive execution, and there hasn’t been much luck going Scotland’s way either.

It’s another quickfire try for Scotland as a fizzing move sees the Irish defensive line carved open by Jones and Price finishes it off under the posts. Russell adds the conversion.

Russell adds the two points, but it’s just consolation at this stage.

Something for Scotland fans to cheer as Ashman breaks through a tackle out wide and bursts towards the line to get some points on the board for the boys in blue.

An exquisite Crowley crossfield kick finds Ringrose in space and he picks the ball out of the air and touches down to add yet more gloss to this dominant scoreline. The conversion isn't made but Ireland will be happy enough.

An extended spell of Scottish possession is an indicator that they’re not going to bow out of this tournament quietly, but the writing is on the wall.

A roar goes around the ground as Ireland flex their muscles and make five consecutive changes in the forward line. That’s a real statement, and it’s clever too, keeping their squad sharp and as fresh as you can in such a tournament environment.

Ireland take advantage of the extra man, stretch the play, and Sheehan crosses in the corner. Sexton misses the conversion.

Smith goes to the bin for a trip that the officials say started everything, which is true of sorts, but I’m sure the Scots will have some thoughts.

Both teams are at each other’s throats for a remarkably long time, with players tumbling over hoardings, strong words being said and the officials watching on intently.
