Leg 3 of the Ocean Race is the longest in the race’s history – a 12,750-nautical mile leg from Cape Town in South Africa to Itajai, Brazil. However, before that is the In-Port race.
The In-Port races take place in seven of The Ocean Race 2022-23's stopover cities, and although points won in the In-Port series are not added to the overall standings, they are used to settle any points ties that occur. So, should there be a tie in the overall standings in Genova, Italy on June 25, the winner of The Ocean Race 2022-23 would be decided by the winner of the In-Port race on July 1.
The Cape Town In-Port race will start on Friday February 24 at 12:10.
There has thus far been one In-Port race - in Alicante - and Team Malizia lead the standings on five points, 11th Hour Racing Team are second on four, Biotherm sit in third on three points, GUYOT environnement - Team Europe are on two points in fourth with Holcim - PRB on zero after failing to finish.

HOLCIM-PRB win the Cape Town In-Port race

Utter dominance from Team Holcim-PRB, a brilliant performance to lead from pretty much start to finish in Cape Town and with it, five points.
11th Hour Racing are second, Team Malizia are third, with GUYOT Environnement Team Europe coming home now in fourth.

12:50

Holcim-PRB are dominating this race and the top four positions look set unless someone makes a big mistake or has an issue.
11th Hour Racing are in second, with Team Malizia in third. Then come GUYOT Environnement, who are trying their best to gain a place. That looks like the most likely change, if there are any, for the podium places.

12:40

Biotherm are out of this race, as we get confirmation from Sam Davies that they tangled with one of the course marks before the start and are on their way back to the port.

12:35

Little bit of controversy here on Lap 2, the first marker has floated away so GUYOT Environnement have taken the longer way around but the other teams have followed the original route. Team Malizia are now in second place thanks to that, with Holcim-PRB still leading the way.

12:30

12:20

Team Holcim-PRB are looking very good right now. They have opened up a lead of 700m. However, the first In-Port race also started well for them, only for the team to fall behind and get timed out.

12:15

Here come Team Malizia as they try to get down the inside at the first turn to take second place from 11th Hour. GUYOT Environnement are right in this battle too.

12:10

We are racing! The starting position is so important for these In-Port races and there was a big battle for the lead spot between Biotherm, Holcim-PRB, 11th Hour Racing and GUYOT Enrivonnement.
Holcim-PRB have got the holeshot and are flying away, brilliant stuff.

12:05

Boats are in the water, we will soon get the race underway proper! Three laps around the markers, not two, on this beautiful course in Cape Town.
The wind is coming from the left in Table Mountain so it should be consistent over the next hour or so.

Can Team Malizia make it back-to-back In-Port race wins? That’ what they will be hoping for.
In the first In-Port race, they won a frenetic battle that saw four of the five IMOCAs hold the lead at some point during a highly unpredictable and nerve-wracking contest.
Let’s hope for more of the same action today!

11:10

The party has already started, albeit on land!

10:45

It's getting more real. GUYOT environnement - Team Europe are the first team to dock out.

10:10

Team Holcim-PRB have been the crew to beat in the overall race, but they failed to finish the first In-Port race in Alicante.
Skipper Kevin Escoffier is in a very positive mood this morning.
"I’m looking forward to the start!” he said. “The first two legs are behind us and there’s a lot ahead. I like to be on the water and to sail.
“It’s important to appreciate where you are and enjoy what you are doing."

09:45

This morning the skippers from each crew have been talking to the media, so here is the best of the what was said ahead of Leg 3.
"I’m fully recovered thanks to my break on Leg 2 and looking forward to Leg 3,” said Team Malizia’s Boris Herrmann.
“We designed a boat with the Southern Ocean in mind and I hope we’ll be able to prove that our design ideas were good."

How do The Ocean Race In-Port races work?

In-port races are fast and furious, with the starting position being key to the result.
A team’s crew members taking part in an In-Port race must have either sailed the previous offshore leg or be scheduled to race the upcoming one.
Three guests are allowed on board too, which is one of the perks of The Ocean Race.

The Ocean Race route in full

A high points scoring system is used for the In-Port Race Series with the winners of an In-Port race being awarded points equal to the number of entries in their fleet.
Second place receives points equivalent to the total number of entries in that fleet minus one – and so on down the rankings.
The overall In-Port Race Series winner is the team with the most points. Any ties are decided in favour of the team that finished higher in the last race.
In-port races typically last for 60 minutes.

How the In-Port Race Series can influence the championship

Although no points are added to the overall championship standings, any ties between teams that are level on points will be decided on the results of the final in-port race on July 1 in Genova.
