Christopher Grotheer broke the track record on the way to recording his first ever World Cup gold medal at the latest men's skeleton race in Altenberg.
Germany's Grotheer delighted his home fans on Saturday morning, posting a new best time in both runs – including a fastest time of 56.10 seconds with his second effort – to take victory.
His total time of 1:52.30 minutes saw him take top spot from reigning World champion Martins Dukurs by 0.3 seconds while Axel Jungk and Alexander Gassner continued a strong day for Germany with third and fourth-place finishes.
For reigning World Cup champion Dukurs it was a first trip to the podium this year after finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the opening two races of the season.
After the third of eight races, Sungbin Yun of Korea moves into the overall lead of the World Cup standings with 609 points after finishing fifth in Altenberg, with Dukurs now second on 586 points.
