World number one and UK champion Robertson was stunned by Tian Pengfei, ranked 61 places below the Australian, in a 5-1 defeat at the Tempodrom.
Tian raced to a 4-0 lead at the interval and even though Robertson pulled one back soon after the restart, the Chinese potter held his nerve to seal the biggest win of his career so far.
"I have beaten Ronnie O'Sullivan before [at the 2010 China Open] but I was a wild card in that event, whereas this is a ranking event so it is my best win so far," said Tian who now plays Rod Lawler in the last 16.
"I was trying not to think about the result, I just played the match frame by frame."
World number two Selby soon followed Robertson out of the competition, falling to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Norway's Kurt Maflin.
Selby held the lead at 2-1 but Maflin hit back with three frames in a row to take what proved to be an unassailable lead, even though Selby pulled one back.
"I'm happy to win although it was a terrible game," said Maflin. "There was a lot of tension for both of us and Mark wasn't even at 10 per cent of his game. I played awful but I'm just happy with the win.
"I just want to keep progressing and hopefully win one of these tournaments sooner or later. If I can get into the top 32 I will think about moving back to the UK permanently."
In other notable results, Dominic Dale, who won the recent Shoot-Out, continued his good form with a 5-3 win over John Higgins, while Liang Wenbo downed Stephen Maguire by the same scoreline.
Judd Trump eased to a 5-0 victory over Mark King, while there were also wins for Ding Junhui, Shaun Murphy and Alan McManus.
The action continues on Friday, with the final scheduled for Sunday.
