That's all folks

We'll have to leave it there, as it's time for our coverage to wind down. This match is in the balance, and it's set to drag well into Friday morning.
Goodbye!

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (22-53)

Chris just takes his eye off the ball, failing to slice in the blue as he looked to develop onto the penultimate red.
Kyren, though, has got little to play with when he comes up to the table.

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (22-23)

Kyren gets aggressive, breaking up the pack and attempting to hammer a red into the bottom-left. It doesn't go in, though, and Chris is able to knock one in that was left hanging in the vicinity.

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (22-22)

Chris is left annoyed after some unfortunate positioning leaves him with little choice but to play for a hard shot on the green, using the rest. It doesn't work out, though. Now, can Kyren take advantage?

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (22-10)

Everything's going badly at the minute for Kyren. He was on a relatively simple yellow to try and get a run going, but he lacked control with the rest, and it's another bad miss.

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (21-4)

A flukey red drops in for Kyren, though the cue ball isn't conducive to anything but a snooker behind the brown.
Chris, though, fails to find a red at the first time of asking, so more points on the board for Kyren.

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (16-4)

The safety cycle is punctured as Chris spots a cut into the bottom-right corner, and then slams in the green to come back down to the bunch. However, his positioning is slightly off, and it's back to safety we go...

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (16-0)

It's a game of cat and mouse at the moment. Both players are playing some excellent safety shots, but who will blink first in this crucial frame?

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (16-0)

Another two fouls, this time for misses on the red. A bit of a nightmare period for Chris, who will be made to play again... And at the fourth time of asking, he gets it right!

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (8-0)

Foul! Having been snookered, Chris gets too much on his attempt, misses the bottom red he was aiming for, and chips the black. Kyren will make him play again.

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (1-0)

Finally! Kyren makes the breakthrough, as he drills a long red into the bottom-left corner pocket. He doesn't see much else on, though, so plays safe.
Meanwhile, Gary Wilson - the reigning champion - is through, having defeated Rory Thor 4-1.

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin (0-0)

This frame is not going anywhere fast, as both players can do nothing but play around the bunch, and there's a possibility a re-rack could be needed.
Chris injects some impetus by opening it up slightly, albeit there really isn't much on at all. A nervy start!

Wilson 2-2 Wakelin

All level! It's now essentially a best of three to see who makes the last eight.

Wilson 2-1 Wakelin (25-79)

Chris has clearly taken plenty of confidence from Kyren's sloppiness, and he clicks through the gears as he develops the reds nicely around the black and pink, potting balls he likely would have missed a couple of frames ago.
The penultimate red is a tricky one, but it drops in too, and Chris now has all the momentum. An unfortunate kiss of the brown denies him a chance to build a ton, but we are on level terms!

Wilson 2-1 Wakelin (25-0)

Kyren's long potting has been way off tonight, but he nails one across the table there to draw first blood in frame four. He could have - should have - been playing for the win now, but instead he has to regain his composure and go again. Can he build a good break on this visit?
He makes a solid start, following up with black-red-green and then coming back down to the bunch, moving up for the blue and then back down for the pink. Yet some really poor positional play leaves himself with a tricker next shot, and he sends it off the cushion, leaving an inviting pot for Chris.

Wilson 2-1 Wakelin

Chris is right back in this, though Kyren only has himself to blame, as he had that frame in his hands.

Wilson 2-0 Wakelin (52-68)

A costly mistake from Kyren, then, with Chris making the most of his second chance.
He clears up for 64 and steals the frame!

Wilson 2-0 Wakelin (52-5)

Another shocker from Chris! After waiting for his chance, he cannot take it, slicing a cut off the jaws of the bottom-right. A rather wild attempt from Kyren follows, though, and Chris is swiftly back up for his next visit.
This time, he keeps his composure and pots along the cushion.

Wilson 2-0 Wakelin (52-4)

Kyren is able to take full advantage, as he develops the reds nicely, methodically clipping his way through the bunch. They're simple shots, but plenty of those have been missed in this match already, so he needs to keep his wits about him.
But... A reprieve for Chris, as a difficult effort into the middle-left goes amiss from Kyren, who's frustrated with himself.

Wilson 2-0 Wakelin (1-4)

Oh dear! What a miss from Chris. It was a simple pot into the middle-right, but he gets it all wrong. He could have been in complete control, but instead he's back in his chair, and Kyren is back up.

Wilson 2-0 Wakelin (1-4)

Kyren gets on the board first, but he's ended up snookering himself, and leaving plenty of reds open for Chris.
He aims for the green, but just goes slightly too wide, and Chris has a real opportunity to drag himself back into this match now.

Round the tables

Noppon Saengkham 4-3 Matthew Selt
Gary Wilson 1-0 Rory Thor
Dominic Dale 0-0 Zhou Yuelong

Bingham blast

What a performance from Stuart Bingham, who has thumped Zhang Anda - one of the players of the season - 4-0.
An emphatic win for the former world champion!

Wilson 2-0 Wakelin

Without playing particularly well, Kyren is 2-0 up, and two frames from a quarter-final.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (75-38)

Free ball is called, and Kyren comes back to the table with a 14-point lead. A lovely, controlled shot on the brown gets another point on the board, and Kyren is definitely in control now.
He cannons off the yellow to tee himself up nicely for the final red, which drops crisply into the middle-right pocket.
The blue goes in after that, then the yellow, off which Kyren circles back for the green to wrap up the frame. It might have been a fluke snooker, but Kyren has made his luck count after those fouls from Chris.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (46-38)

Kyren snookers Chris behind the yellow, and the latter has to go all the way around the table to try and clip the last red. He gets agonisingly close on the first go, and then the second checks the pink. Kyren makes him go again... and another miss, and another four points.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (32-38)

Kyren expertly steers himself out of a difficult snooker, going off two cushions to clip a red that was between the blue and black at the far end of the table.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (32-37)

Miss from Kyren! Well, what a let off that is for Chris, who is back at the table after the world number nine clips the jaws of the bottom-left pocket.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (20-37)

Shocker! What a miss from Chris! That was such a simple pot on the red, but a bit like John Higgins earlier, Wakelin sends it wide. A stinker for Chris, who can now only watch as Kyren looks to punish him.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (20-4)

Wonderful from Kyren, who nails a long pot into the bottom-left and manages to break up the bunch further too.
Yet some loose work with the cue ball leaves him with another long pot, which this time he can't make, despite it being easier than his last, and that lets Chris back in.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin (0-4)

Wakelin goes ahead, and follows up that red with the yellow. Not big scorers, but points on the board early.
His positioning isn't the best, but by utilising the rest, he manages to slice in a loose red and break up the bunch. Unfortunately, the cue doesn't fall kindly for the black at all, and he's forced to go back up to the other end of the table to play safe off the green. A shame, that deserved better.

Higgins analysis

Here's some analysis on John Higgins, who is the last Scottish player remaining in the tournament.
picture

'Potting the hard balls and missing the easy ones!' - Higgins analyses win with McManus

Bingham in cruise control

Former world champion Bingham is in complete control against Anda, having raced into a 3-0 lead.
Ford, meanwhile, has overcome O'Donnell 4-2.

Wilson 1-0 Wakelin

A cagey start, but some confident snooker there from Kyren, who noses ahead.
picture

'Let's give him the benefit of the doubt!' - Did Wilson mean this long-range double?

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (68-28)

That's the end of that! Kyren got out of two tricky snookers and then nailed a long cut of the yellow into the green pocket. Chris concedes.

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (66-28)

Kyren drops in a black to leave Chris needing three snookers to get back into this frame. Just the colours left on the table, now, but Chris isn't conceding.

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (26-28)

What a shot! Supreme snooker from Kyren, who sinks a long-range double. Whether he meant it or not, only he will know, but he's got a brilliant opportunity to take the lead now!

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (25-28)

A decent run by Chris, but a bad miss on the pink brings the break to an end. Kyren, though, puts himself in bother with his first shot, and though it goes in, he has to then play safe.

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (24-11)

Kyren gets on the board with a neat clip into the bottom-left from close range, albeit he had to use the rest to help.
A cannon into the bunch off the black provides him with a great chance to clear on this visit, but then a routine pot into the middle-left, which is already proving a pesky pocket for both players, goes begging.

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (0-11)

Well, that's a bad, bad miss from Chris, who was presented with a simple pot into the centre-left. Kyren, though, doesn't have much on and has to play safe.

Wilson 0-0 Wakelin (0-4)

World number nine Wilson was 3-0 down to David Gilbert earlier, but rallied to win 4-3 and set up this match.
He's just had a huge slice of bad luck, though, as he inadvertently sends the blue into the middle-left pocket, leaving several reds on in the process.

Here we go

We're back to table one now at the Meadowbank Centre, with Kyren Wilson out to take on Chris Wakelin for a place in the last eight.

Reigning champ Gary Wilson thought he was 'dead and buried'

John's headache

Speaking to Eurosport, John said: "My head is bursting, it's throbbing, really throbbing. I felt a lot better last night, let's put it that way. I got a massive stroke of luck during the fifth frame."

Higgins 4-2 Haotian

That wasn't smooth sailing for Higgins, but he is through! He gets the job done, 4-2.

Higgins 3-2 Haotian (76-33)

Miss! Lyu left John with a presentable long pot, but the 48-year-old slices it off the jaws, much to the chagrin of the Scottish crowd. A rather hopeful shot, though, does nothing for Lyu, as a double-kiss leaves John with an opportunity to surely put the frame to bed...
This time, he grasps that chance, drilling in the red and then sending the black into the bottom-left corner too.
The final red is match ball, and it drops home into the middle-right pocket. Far from perfect from the world number 12, but he is heading into the quarters.

Higgins 3-2 Haotian (51-33)

Lyu hesitates over going for a long pot towards the top-left pocket - in fairness, the cue ball was so close to the target ball, it would have been touch and go. He instead plays safe, but John avoids the foul by clipping a red just slightly, managing to leave it on the cushion in the process.

Higgins 3-2 Haotian (51-14)

Terrible shot! John has slipped up again! All he had to do was knock a red into the middle pocket, it was straight and simple, yet he got it all wrong and, to compound his frustrations, he then opened up a further four reds in the middle of the table.
Lyu is quick to capitalise, clearing two of those loose reds and potting the blue and pink. This is a real chance for Lyu to steal this frame...

Higgins 3-2 Haotian (51-0)

John is defending well; it's a case of just making things awkward for Lyu now, and not leaving any gaps.

Higgins 3-2 Haotian (51-0)

Confident snooker from John, possibly for the first time this evening - maybe he has his groove back?
Or, maybe not. He cannons into the bunch but doesn't leave himself with anything on, so he plays a decent safety and returns to his seat with a half-century under his belt.

Higgins 3-2 Haotian (30-0)

No looking back now from John, surely? He drew first blood and has built a really solid lead.

Higgins 3-2 Haotian

What an emotional roller coaster of a frame that was! John got lucky with that fluke, though maybe he deserves that good fortune, given how much venom he went with to get out of the snooker.
He's ahead, and within one frame of reaching the last eight.

Higgins 2-2 Haotian (62-54)

What a shot!
John turns a snooker into a pot, hitting the red so sweetly off the cushion that it sinks straight into the top-right pocket. The green follows in, and that is possibly an even better pot, given there was no luck involved there, and from staring down the barrel of losing this frame, Higgins has turned it on its head!
He works his way to the black, building a one-point lead... but he makes no mistake, and he takes the frame!

Round the tables

Sanderson Lam 4-1 Anthony McGill
Tom Ford 2-2 Martin O’Donnell
Noppon Saengkham 1-2 Matthew Selt

Higgins 2-2 Haotian (31-54)

Lyu senses a moment to strike, with John's frustration clear.
He builds the break nicely, though the pink is a problem ball when it has to be re-spotted below two reds. However, Lyu deals with it - he does get lucky, cannoning in two reds at once, though some poor positioning then leaves him with a difficult double attempt on the final red...
Instead, he plays it safe, and manages to hide the red behind the blue. John still does have a chance here, though admittedly, it's slim.

Higgins 2-2 Haotian (31-8)

More anger from John, as he misses to the middle. He was put off by some movement in the crowd, but that's simply a sign that his concentration is wavering too much.

Higgins 2-2 Haotian (15-8)

Lyu is seething with himself! But this is his issue, he seems to think one step ahead without focusing on the task at hand, and for the third time in this match, he skews a simple black wide. A reprieve for John, then, though it's not like he has been at his best so far either.

Higgins 2-2 Haotian (15-4)

John gets straight onto the front foot, nailing the first red into middle-left, before spinning off the blue and down towards the business end of the table, with the bunch having been split after a rather slack break-off from Lyu.
However, his positioning isn't great at all, and all he's left with is a cut on a red. But from that, he only manages to snooker himself, and a foul brings Lyu to the table.

Round the tables

Sanderson Lam 3-1 Anthony McGill
Tom Ford 1-2 Martin O’Donnell
Noppon Saengkham 1-1 Matthew Selt

Higgins 2-2 Haotian

A big frame from Lyu, and it's all to play for heading into the final three frames.

Higgins 2-1 Haotian (18-100)

John blinks first, with a cut shot clipping the jaws of the middle-left. Lyu sweeps it up, with the green then dropping in after that.
Some poor positional play means he has to use the rest, but he manages to squeeze the next red home into the bottom-right.
Excellent work around the black allows Lyu to find angles on the reds at the bottom of the bunch. The youngster really gets into his flow as he sweeps through the colours, and after a cagey opening, a clearance of 91 restores parity.

Higgins 2-1 Haotian (18-8)

Lyu can't position the cue ball after cutting in the black at the top end of the table, so he has to play it safe.
John, expertly, does likewise, leaving the white nestled right next to the brown. Lyu handles it well, clipping it carefully into a gap in the bunch, but he's on the back foot as John sends the cue ball back up the table.
Plenty of tension at the table - both know that one mistake could prove fatal at this stage in the frame.

Higgins 2-1 Haotian (18-1)

Disappointment for John, as he puts a bit too much power on an attempted pot of the pink. He's annoyed with himself - again. That break was looking promising.

Round the tables

Sanderson Lam 3-0 Anthony McGill
Tom Ford 1-2 Martin O’Donnell
Noppon Saengkham 1-0 Matthew Selt

Higgins 2-1 Haotian (0-1)

A good start from Lyu comes to nothing, as he again loses focus on the next shot. He broke up the bunch, but missed the black, and now it's advantage John.

Higgins 2-1 Haotian

Yep, Lyu has given up the chase in this frame, so John hits the front for the first time. The three-time finalist played well there, and will be aiming to build up some momentum now. He's halfway there!

Higgins 1-1 Haotian (72-0)

Foul! Lyu goes in-off on an attempted safety, and it looks like he'll concede...

Higgins 1-1 Haotian (68-0)

John builds some momentum and tallies up a decent run of 68, which comes to an end with a stray red. He is well in control of this frame now.

Higgins 1-1 Haotian (7-0)

A scrappy start to frame three, but the bunch has been opened up, so both players have to try and ensure they keep the cue ball under control.
John, though, plays bravely, arrowing the first red into the centre-left pocket to get on the board. The pink follows in, and the Scot has an open table to play with now.

Higgins 1-1 Haotian

Two frames down, and it's all square in this best-of-seven tie.

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (91-24)

The black is hammered home and the final red follows from John, which puts him into an unassailable lead.
The colours follow in, bar the final black, and it's job done.

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (47-24)

A lapse in concentration from Lyu on a red into the bottom-right, and now it's back to John. Surely, the veteran won't let this frame slip for a third time?

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (47-8)

Another error from John, as he again fails to take the frame away from Lyu.

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (34-8)

Well, a huge chance to put this frame to bed has gone begging for John. He tried to cannon off the blue into the bunch, but he missed the reds by about an inch, and is left having to play safe. Another frustrating moment for the four-time world champ.

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (2-8)

Real sloppiness from Lyu, who squandered a simple red. John makes him pay this time, but can he keep his composure and build a solid run?

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (1-8)

John is annoyed with himself. He had a simple pot into the corner pocket, but his positioning was poor, and he left himself with no choice but to play safe off the black.

Higgins 0-1 Haotian (0-8)

A strong start to frame two from Lyu, who sends a long pot into the bottom-left corner pocket.
A cannon off the black broke up the bunch, but the cue ball was left touching a red, leaving him with a thin cut that he couldn't pull off. Now John will get a chance.

Round the tables

Sanderson Lam 1-0 Anthony McGill
Tom Ford 0-1 Martin O’Donnell

Higgins 0-1 Haotian

That slip-up on the black proved costly for John, who could not get back on the table. An excellent start from Lyu.

Higgins 0-0 Haotian (12-93)

Lyu gets into his stride with some purposeful, powerful shots, sprinkled with some excellent positional play.
He spins down from the top of the table to break up the bunch, which puts him into a commanding position to sweep through the remaining reds.
The 26-year-old does just that, and proceeds to build a big break in confident fashion. A miss on the blue caps off the break at 89, but that's the frame won.

Higgins 0-0 Haotian (12-4)

That's a fine response from John. He was left a small opening on a long red, but he sent it home with aplomb.
The green followed, and so did the next red, but then what should have been a simple black misses! Lyu is back to the table...

Higgins 0-0 Haotian (0-4)

Lyu takes first blood after a rather bizarre, and very unfortunate, foul from John, who appeared to go for a three-ball plant into the right-centre pocket.
He couldn't pull it off, but one of the loose reds clatters off the right-hand cushion and cannons into the brown, which nestles into the top-left.

Under way

Okay, let's get going. Lyu has broken off!

Coming up

Right, a little later than advertised, the evening session will soon be getting up and running.
First, it'll be Haotian v Higgins, who has reached three semi-finals this season, but is yet to win a title so far.

'I was absolutely useless'

Wow. Gary Wilson was in no mood to hold back on the analysis of his own performance there against Joe O'Connor.
The reigning champion told Eurosport: "I was absolutely useless, in honesty, I was very lucky, Joe couldn't finish me off. I'm smiling but I don't know what to say, I don't know how I got the four [frames]. It feels like I can't control my cue arm at all. It seems to be getting progressively worse. Now I just feel like I'm not even controlling what I'm doing, it's horrible. I'm just hitting them really quick, I've got no timing at all, throwing my cue at them. You can't play snooker like that.
"I get the feeling over the years people haven't listened, they think it's just in your head. It's just a problem I've got and I can't seem to help it. I'm not even practicing to the level I'm used to, I'm still doing it in practice as well. When you're bringing it into your practice game, when there's no pressure, then you think there's really got to be something up there.
"I've tried all sorts. Some of it probably comes to changing that many things that I don't even know where I am anymore. Part of it, is probably sticking with something and going with it, but each time it still creeps in. I'm sort of at a loss, I don't really know what to do."
Wilson is through, at least, and he'll be back in action in a few hours.

Great shot!

Wilson gets the win over O'Connor as he takes on, and perfectly executes, a long pot on the yellow to swing the match in the reigning champion's favour.
In a repeat of last year's final, it went to the wire, but Wilson is the one who makes his way into the round of 16.

Slight delay

With two matches still ongoing, there will be a bit longer of a wait for the evening sesh to get starter.
Both of the ongoing games are finely poised, but in particular Wilson v O'Connor. It is 41-42 in O'Connor's favour in the deciding frame, though Wilson has been putting his opponent in trouble with some excellent snookers.

Still to come

We've got a stacked evening sesh to bring you coverage of tonight. Our first featured match will see Lyu Haotian take on John Higgins, a three-time Scottish Open runner-up.
We'll also bring you score updates from Tom Ford v Martin O’Donnell, Noppon Saengkham v Matthew Selt and Sanderson Lam v Anthony McGill early on.
Then, we'll focus primarily on Chris Wakelin v Kyren Wilson, while Stuart Bingham is also in action.

The state of play

Before we get into the evening's action, let's take a look back at the results from earlier on.
The great Jimmy White was a 4-1 loser to Dominic Dale, and Zhang Anda overcame Si Jiahui.
There's two matches ongoing from the afternoon sesh, with Ashley Carty currently leading Rory Thor 3-2, while Gary Wilson and Joe O'Connor are level at 3-3.

Welcome back

Hello! Welcome back for the evening session. We've got plenty of action to bring you tonight, so stick with us!

That's us done for the afternoon

Join us again at 6.30pm GMT for the evening sesh!

Around the tables

Si Jiahui 2-4 Zhang Anda
Andrew Higginson 1-2 Zhou Yuelong
Rory Thor 1-2 Ashley Carty
Dominic Dale 1-1 Jimmy White

Wilson 2-0 O'Connor

Nope, Gary drifts pink down the table to the green, and he's two in front.

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor (63-45)

Gary lays a snooker, green on bottom rail, white blocked by pink and black; Joe taps the table, misses, and Gary tidies up. Brown follows, then blue to the green - it hits the outermost point of the jaw, then somehow is magnetised into the hole. The pink, though, stays out, so Joe returns to the table needing a snooker.

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor (47-45)

The snooker gets Gary in but a poor positional shot means he's soon playing safe. No matter, left a cut shortly afterwards, he spanks yellow to the green, but he's not on the next ball.

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor (29-45)

Gary misses the yellow - "by about a week,"says Uncle Joe - nearly goes in-off, then flukes a snooker behind the pink instead.

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor (29-45)

He cannot, going in-off the yellow then, when he gets another go, he misses to left-centre, and Gary has a chance to steal - though the green is tight to the side.

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor (24-38)

Which he can't quite take, forced to play safe he runs out of position. But his effort is a goodun, Gary left on the bottom rail ... from where he drains a stunning starter into right corner - he's feeling himself now - and gets going again. But then a bad miss that no one saw coming hands Joe an opportunity to make the frame safe; he'll be needing to take this.

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor (0-15)

A slow start to frame two, but Joe eventually gets himself away with a clip to the yellow, then works himself an opportunity. Good chance to impose himself on the match.

Around the tables

Si Jiahui 2-4 Zhang Anda
Andrew Higginson 1-1 Zhou Yuelong
Rory Thor 0-1 Ashley Carty
Dominic Dale 0-0 Jimmy White

Wilson 1-0 O'Connor

A 44 then an 87, and the champ is away again.

Wilson 0-0 O'Connor (67-0)

Gary runs out of position and finds a quality safety, which yields an immediate opportunity to close out. He's looking so much better than at the start of yesterday's match.

Wilson 0-0 O'Connor (36-0)

Gary, who rediscovered himself at the last moment yesterday in beating Xing Zihao 4-3, is left one to left-middle and he gets away like he's just carried on playing from yesterday. He's not wanting to give his title away and the way the draw is, he'll fancy himself to defend it - or would if he didn't have confidence issues.

Coming up next

Gary Wilson v Joe O'Connor
In a repeat of last season's final.

Around the tables

Si Jiahui 2-3 Zhang Anda
Andrew Higginson 1-0 Zhou Yuelong
Rory Thor 0-0 Ashley Carty

Kyren Wilson beats Dave Gilbert 4-3!

A brilliant comeback, not because Kyren just went mad like Sam Craigie did against Mark J Williams, but because he didn't yet still found a way. He meets Chris Wakelin later tonight, and will seriously fancy himself for this; Dave looks like he wants to yak. Man, that pink.

Wilson 3-3 Gilbert (64-28)

Yeah, and don't forget about the black off its spot; this defeat is hurting Dave already, you can see it on his face. Kyren hasn't even played that well, but he knows how to win; I'm afraid Dave still has much to learn in that aspect.

Wilson 3-3 Gilbert (43-28)

Kyren slides a starter to left corner, and Dave might still be pondering that pink. The balls are very nicely situated, and Kyren should finish up from here; Dave will be feeling very poorly.

Wilson 3-3 Gilbert (39-28)

We know Kyren won't jib this and, more importantly, he knows he won't too. Sat in his seat, Dave exhales; if this next shot, the split off the green, works well, he's done for. But Kyren misses both pot and cannon! Another twist! This expletive game!

Wilson 3-3 Gilbert (7-28)

Oh, David. David, David, David. He misses a black off its spot and I fear this is the difference between them: one doesn't mind pressure, the other can struggle. So Kyren, who must've feared the worst, is now at the table looking to pinch a match in which he's been miles off his best ... but as I type he cannons the brown meaning end of break. No matter: he then flukes a snooker, Dave's escape leaves one to right-centre, and this is now a great chance for Kyrizzle to seal an unlikely comeback.

Wilson 3-3 Gilbert (0-18)

Kyren always backs himself and he goes at a long one to left corner, dead slow ... except the ball won't drop for him and Dave cleans it up via cut-back! He'll have to fashion this chance because there's not much open, but so far he's doing a decent job of it...

Losing a 3-0 lead and retrieving a 3-0 deficit tells us plenty about both Dave and Kyren. The decider should be decent...

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert (52-59)

A poor blue means Kyren's dead straight on the pink; that's an oversight which makes the black a little harder...

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert (44-59)

The black is pretty close to the top rail, so Kyren will need to be careful on the pink, but otherwise, he's fought his way to a decider.

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert (25-59)

Dave misses first time and when he hits, he leaves a starter. He'll be fearing a decider here, because there's nothing safe, and failing to close out from here will sting; though not as much as the pink he missed last frame.

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert (5-59)

Kyren goes at a nasty one almost the full diag of the table, but Dave misses his retaliatory cut-back by a way. He's really close to the next round, but not there yet - the lead is 55 ... 54, Kyren just fluked a red ... with 67 left, Dave now stuck behind the yellow.

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert (4-59)

Targeting the bunch off yellow and side, Dave doesn't hit the ball he plans for but does develop one for right corner ... except on the stretch, he leaves it on the lip as he tries to ensure he's on the pink. BUT WHAT IS THIS?! Kyren tries to drain the red Dave missed off the side, presumably assuming any touch will send it down. Not so! He too leaves it in the jaws, and though the pack will need breaking off the blue and who knows how that'll go, chances are this match is soon over. Or not! Dave gets a nice connection, but he's on nowt! This game!

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert (4-26)

Dave flows in a glorious starter to left corner, which will make him feel better after losing that last frame. There's a lot of work to do, but also a chance for him to rack up a lead even if he can't finish the match at this visit.

Wilson 2-3 Gilbert

Drama! Kyren tidies up and closes to within a frame; how crucial might that missed pink be - today and at the end of the weekend?! This game, eh?

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (54-64)

Dave overcuts and leaves it in the jaws! He has missed match-ball!

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (54-64)

Does Dave move the pink out or play behind it? Former, but he'll need the rest extension. This for the match....

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (54-52)

It's a clever break this, Dave forcing his way back into the frame and perhaps setting up a double on what'll be the final red. If it goes down, it'll probably mean the match ... and it does! But the white winds up just off the bottom rail, so here comes a cut-back black to get down for yellow ... and he plays a beauty! The pink, though, isn't far off the side rail, so this isn't over quite yet, but what a dish it'd be...

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (50-21)

Dave wobbles one into left corner then breaks a few balls on the side and gets to work.

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (50-0)

Another excellent pot from Kyren gets him again, but then he undercuts one with the rest. Dave, though, hasn't potted for a while and can't take the chance he's left

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (50-0)

Kyren's a big fan of his recovery-potting and he sends a nice one to left corner; I'd be surprised if he missed before the frame was over. And he doesn't, eschewing a difficult rail-pot and sticking another one out of commission.

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert (14-0)

Kyrizzle goes hard to left corner and misses, but a felicitous double-kiss helps encourage Dave to play a poor shot that leaves a chance. A good one. This is getting close...

Wilson 1-3 Gilbert

Yup, Kyren gets his ton and he's not out of this yet.

Wilson 0-3 Gilbert (47-0)

This is a chance to finish the frame, and this time potting to right-middle, Kyren hits the jaw ... before pocket accepts ball. The frame will be his, and he'll fancy a ton to go with it, I shouldn't wonder.

Wilson 0-3 Gilbert (30-0)

Excellent from Kyren, a cut-back starter setting him away, then a fair split leaves him well-set to win the frame at this visit ... if he can get rid of the next ball, a dead thin cut to right-centre. But, well, oh dear: he can't send it down, but Dave, trying to pot an even finer cut, misses entirely. Kyren is in again!

Wilson 0-3 Gilbert

Jordan Brown didn't even have a chance to play poorly when facing Kyren yesterday - he barely got a shot. But Dave has imposed himself, and the highest-ranked player left in the competition could soon be off hame.

Wilson 0-2 Gilbert (0-70)

Left a brute to left-centre and knowing it might cost the frame if he misses, Dave slots it superbly, and this is another chance for him to go 3-0. Kyren is in all sorts.

Wilson 0-2 Gilbert (0-42)

If anything, Clive, he's hit that too well. I spoke to soon: Dave got into that last post so nicely he's on nothing. So he tries a double, missing, then Kyren does likewise.

Wilson 0-2 Gilbert (0-42)

Ach, when you go into the cluster from below and hit the middle red, the white sticks, and that's what happens; end of break. No matter: Kyren goes down the table but dangles a tempter to left corner, it's drilled down beautifully, and this is another opportunity for Dave, who bags a lovely blue as I type.

Wilson 0-2 Gilbert (0-21)

Trouble for Kyren, who misses with his roll-up, leaving a red long the rail. Dave sees it away, gets the black going, and he can build a nice lead from this opportunity.

Wilson 0-2 Gilbert

Dave's playing the better stuff, and Kyren hasn't got going yet.

Wilson 0-1 Gilbert (17-57)

He doesn't even get to it, missing a black and getting incredibly lucky to cover a red to left-middle. No matter, Dave thunks the other one into right corner, sends the brown down next and is he trying another double? Yes he is, and down it goes! The green, down towards left corner, is tricky, but drain the yellow and Kyren only gets a respot with all the balls potted. So Dave sinks that, tries a cannon on the next ball ... and oh that's lovely, a double-kiss leaving a dolly! He clears a few more colours, and that's halfway to victory!

Wilson 0-1 Gilbert (17-30)

Dave cuts a pink into right corner and develops the two reds beneath it - there's one other remaining, in baulk - but he doesn't get great position, tries to force it long to the green, and misses. Chance for Kyren, but there's a ball on the side rail...

Wilson 0-1 Gilbert (16-6)

Kyren misses with a thin contact then slams down a starter, landing on nowt ... and again, when he clobbers a plant to right corner. Hew does then get in, but winds up forced to send a green long thanks to a poor positional shot, and Dave now has a go at a table that's less complex than it appears at first glance.

Wilson 0-1 Gilbert

An entertaining start, and this could be a really fun match.

Wilson 0-0 Gilbert (29-66)

Ach, Kyren gets into position to bin one of the railed reds, having developed it slightly, but going hard to get position, he leaves it in the jaws, and Dave seals the opener with a double.

Wilson 0-0 Gilbert (14-58)

Er, not that handy anymore. Kyren steers in a fantastic long opener, and if he can break the pack off the black, he's in business. But the split doesn't go that well, two reds on the rails and a nasty one to right-middle coming up. But he drains it well, and will still fancy himself to dish here.

Wilson 0-0 Gilbert (0-58)

David runs out of position and has a think - he might glance a red off the pack towards left-middle - but in the end he plays safe with a handy lead.

Wilson 0-0 Gilbert (0-35)

Kyren is the highest-ranked player left in this competition now, and he played almost perfectly in the last round. Problem is, hitting that level again seems unlikely and in Dave he meets probably the next-best player left. And though the Warrior has the first go at a long one, it's the Angry Farmer at the table potting balls.

Off we go!

Second on

It's Gary Wilson, the defending champ, taking on Joe O'Connor in a repeat of last term's final. Oh, and on table two it's the Eurosport derby: Jimmy White v Dominic Dale.

We start this afternoon with a potential jazzer

Dave Gilbert v Kyren Wilson should be a lot of fun. Kyren is in terrific form, while Dave is a stylist with an action to die for.

Afternoon all!

And welcome to the Scottish Open 2023 - it's day four, which means it's moving day!

Wednesday recap - Brecel stunned by O'Donnell, Selt downs Selby in deciding frame

On a night of upsets at the Scottish Open, a composed and clinical Martin O’Donnell toppled an out-of-sorts Luca Brecel to reach the last 16 in Edinburgh.
O’Donnell, who regained his tour card for this season, recovered from dropping the opening frame to frustrate the reigning world champion and complete a 4-2 victory to set up a fourth-round clash with either Ding Junhui or Tom Ford.
“It felt like I played really solid out there today,” O’Donnell told Eurosport. “It felt like I didn’t really miss too many and I scored quite well.
“I put him under pressure when I got my chances and thankfully got through it.”
In another shock, Matthew Selt recovered from 3-1 down to beat Mark Selby and book his place in the fourth round.
Both players had chances in every frame, but it was the four-time world champion who uncharacteristically faltered with the winning line in sight.
They shared the opening two frames before Selt was made to pay for missed opportunities in the third and fourth as Selby pounced with breaks of 67 and 50 to move 3-1 clear.
But Selt set up a deciding frame and prevailed after Selby missed a simple brown.
