Teen star Stolz breaks 1000m record in Salt Lake City World Cup victory

Teenage sensation Jordan Stolz opened the Salt Lake City Speed Skating World Cup with a bang as he smashed the men's 1000m world record and wrote his name into the history books.
The 19-year-old American crossed the finish line in a ground-breaking time of 1:05.37 to become only the second man to break the one minute six seconds barrier.
Having broken the US 1000m record at the ISU Four Continents Championships last week, Stolz went one step further at his home World Cup event and eclipsed Pavel Kulizhnikov's previous record of 1:05.69 to take gold.
"I can't believe it," he said.
"I knew I was going fast. I just wanted to be fast enough to maybe get close to the old record, but I didn't expect it to be 3/10ths."
Ning Zhongyan of China finished in second, 1.6 seconds behind Stolz, while Italy's David Bosa clinched third.
Korea's Chung Jae Won brought the opening day of the World Cup to a close with gold in the men's mass start, pipping Bart Swings and Bart Hoolwerf to the line in a dramatic sprint finish.
Joy Beune held off Olympic champion and teammate Irene Schouten to soar to her first-ever individual World Cup gold in the women's 3000m.
The 24-year-old started quickly against Momoka Horikawa of Japan and dominated to finish in a new personal best time of 3:56.86.
Schouten was 1.34 seconds behind for silver and Canada's Valerie Maltais claimed bronze.
Elsewhere, Japan's Miho Takagi clinched 1000m gold over home favourite Kimi Goetz by just 0.08 seconds.
