Susie O'Neill quits IOC

Australia's Olympic champion Susie O'Neill has resigned from the International Olympic Committee to spend more time with her family. An IOC member since 2000 said she hoped to get involved with the Olympics again in the future but had quit for now to spen

"I continue to be very committed to the Olympic movement and at a future time I hope to again be actively involved with Olympic responsibilities," she said in a statement.
O'Neill was elected to the IOC during the Sydney Olympics and was a member of the Athletes Commission, the Co-ordination Commission for the Beijing Olympics and the board of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
IOC president Jacques Rogge praised her contribution to the Olympic movement.
"I would like to thank her for her active and valuable contribution over the past four years during which she played an important role in representing the voice of athletes on the IOC," he said.
Australia's Olympic Committee president John Coates said: "We are very sorry to be losing Susie as an IOC member. We will miss her, but fully understand and support her decision to step down to devote her energy to raising a family.
"She has been a fresh voice within our ranks and has done a tremendous job expressing views on behalf of athletes throughout the world."
O'Neill was one of Australia's greatest female swimmers. She won Olympic gold medals in Atlanta and Sydney and was world champion in 1998.
