Alcaraz is re-defining clutch this afternoon.

Once again he needs something special at 15-30 but delivers in style with a slide into an angled stretch volley to back up a bullet forehand up the line.

It briefly threatens to get sticky here from 40-0 up as Medvedev corks a beauty of a return winner, but the Spaniard clouts away a volley at the net to reach parity with a game to 30.

Daniil follows suit as he comes through a mini scare when a defensive lob almost catches him out to polish off the perfect hold with a third ace of the day.

No danger there as Alcaraz wins a crosscourt exchange of missile-like forehands and clocks up some cheap off the first serve to hold to love.

It’s twitchy stuff from Medvedev as he wrestles with trying to combat the genius moments that are denying him reward for his efficient, Steady-Eddy approach.

It feels like he’s about to succumb at 15-40 but Alcaraz can only steer a backhand into the net before fluffing a very make-able forehand attempt up the line.

Medvedev breathes a sigh of relief and manages to gather his composure to keep his nose in front from deuce.

Alcaraz really is producing moments of absolute magic when under the microscope.

A big serve down the T and simple volley are followed by a thunderous forehand-stun volley combo that again quashes Medvedev’s hopes at 15-30.

The Russian comes up with the answers though, producing some clutch serves to kick off Set 2 on the front foot.

Alcaraz doesn’t miss a first serve and as a result guides away a crosscourt backhand winner to take the opener on his first set point in 39 minutes.

Medvedev looks for an instant response and rattles a crosscourt forehand winner to crank up some pressure at 0-30.

Alcaraz wins a face-off of drop shots at the net and steers himself towards taking the game with an emphatic 1-2 punch up the line and a third ace of the match.

He does just enough with a smash to finish the job and consolidate that break.
