MATCH - WAWRINKA 6-4 4-1 GOLUBEV. The ankle/calf injury finally proves too much for Golubev as he promply retires after conceding a second break. The eighth seed moves safely into the second round.

BREAK - WAWRINKA 6-4 4-1 GOLUBEV. Wawrinka slowly begins to tick with a variety of booming winners. A grapple for the fifth game ensues as the pair duke it out at deuce, but a slick forehand proves the difference.

WAWRINKA 6-4 3-1 GOLUBEV: Wawrinka suddenly decides to make the net his friend by randomly sweeping to the forgotten part of the court five times in the row. The dramatic change of tactic works a treat, and he happily consolidates his break.

BREAK - WAWRINKA 6-4 2-1 GOLUBEV: This time, the Swiss Mister takes his opportunity. A stray sliced backhand from Golubev duly hands Wawrinka another early break.

WAWRINKA 6-4 1-1 GOLUBEV: Wawrinka quickly back with a hold of his own. Aside from the one brief letdown as he served for the first set, there has been little worry on his own serve.

WAWRINKA 6-4 0-1 GOLUBEV: After looking on his way to surrendering an immediate break, Golubev recovers from an ominous 0-30 to hold with a series of booming first serves.

SET - WAWRINKA 6-4 GOLUBEV: As if the hiccup at 5-2 had never happened, Wawrinka fires down a couple of massive serves complimented with a couple of fine backhands. First set pocketed.

WAWRINKA 5-4 GOLUBEV: Confidence oozing, forehands suddenly off Golubev’s racquet in all directions. A cruelly simple wide serve to forehand down-the-line combination followed by a service winner seals the hold for the underdog.

WAWRINKA 5-3 GOLUBEV: Well, rather than just an ankle, the trainer duly inserts a mile-long strip of tape stemming from ankle to just under Golubev’s knee. As often happens, however, an opponent’s injury doesn’t always have a positive effect on a player’s focus. Three errors nowhere to be seen in the early stages from Wawrinka, and Glolubev steals back a break.

WAWRINKA 5-2 GOLUBEV: Errors piling up for Golubev as he attempts to stem the tide. Two in succession and he surrenders the second break with ease. Without hesitation, Golubev immediately calls the trainer and is receiving treatment on his ankle.

WAWRINKA 4-2 GOLUBEV: A free-swinging, serve and volley-including service game from Wawrinka allows him to consolidate his early break with ease. Last year’s breakthrough man slowly finding his rhythm.

WAWRINKA 3-2 GOLUBEV: As if on a clay court, Wawrinka is creeping far back into the shade beside the linesmen to return Golubev's serve. Evidently a successful tactic, however, as he promptly swoops in and takes the break.

WAWRINKA 2-2 GOLUBEV: A quick hold for Wawrinka as he eases through with a series of strong serves. Neither player quite in tune with their returns in the early stages.

WAWRINKA 1-2 GOLUBEV: At last, first signs of Wawrinka's trademark backhand as the Swiss dispatches a flashing crosscourt winner. But a string of strong serves gives Golubev a more comfortable second hold.

WAWRINKA 1-1 GOLUBEV: The favourite wastes no time in levelling up the match. After some thunderous groundstrokes, a sickly sweet ace straight down the T to seal the hold.

WAWRINKA 0-1 GOLUBEV: Straight to deuce, but Golubev digs out his first hold in the heat after a long rally ending with a Wawrinka error.
