Ferrer 3-6 3-6 3-6 Nishikori. Game, set and match. Nishikori nets an inside out forehand to squander his first match point while a forehand long of the baseline wastes his second chance. But Nishikori does wrap up the win at the third attempt when Ferrer runs round the ball and nets his forehand.
Ferrer 3-6 3-6 3-5 Nishikori. The cross court backhand from Nishikori has been firing particularly well today and he rattles one over the net on an acute angle on his way to securing another hold. Ferrer actually gets there but cannot do anything much with his response and it brings up game point for Nishikori. A big second serve that seals the game for the Japanese player as Ferrer's return sails long. The Spaniard will have to serve to keep this match alive now.
Ferrer 3-6 3-6 3-4 Nishikori. Well done Ferrer as he posts his easiest service hold for a while, dropping just the one point in the game on a double fault. He's still a break down in this set but at least keeping some scoreboard pressure on his Japanese opponent.
Ferrer 3-6 3-6 2-4 Nishikori eases through a love service hold that he seals with his seventh ace. The fifth seed is potentially just two games away now from booking his place in the quarter-finals in Melbourne.
Ferrer 3-6 3-6 2-3 Nishikori. A couple of battling service holds from both players as Ferrer is pushed to deuce, albeit without having to face a break point, while Nishikori holds from 30-all.
Ferrer 3-6 3-6 1-2 Nishikori. Nishikori works Ferrer round the baseline before producing a forehand that Ferrer cannot deal with to put some pressure on the Spaniard at 40-30. But he goes wide with a backhand down the line on the very next point to help Ferrer hold and remain just the one break down.
Ferrer 3-6 3-6 0-2 Nishikori. The fifth seed squanders a first game point after Ferrer has done brilliantly well to get up to a decent drop shot. Every step looks painful for the Spaniard now so perhaps Nishikori thought he'd done enough with the drop shot. Either way, Nishikori is forced to play another shot but can only put his attempted lov wide across court. Still, it's only a temporary respite for Ferrer as Nishikori goes on to hold two points later to consolidate the break. Must win service game coming up for Ferrer now.

Ferrer 3-6 3-6 0-1 Nishikori. Break. Nishikori is just breaking the Ferrer game down bit by bit as he draws the forehand long from the Spaniard to set up another couple of break points. And again the Japanese player takes full advantage of his opportunity going across court into the sun with a forehand winner to seal the early break in this third set.

Ferrer 3-6 3-6 Nishikori. Set. Nishikori goes long with a forehand down the centre of the court to squander a first set point but Ferrer finds himself staring at a two sets to love deficit after the second when he fails to land his backhand return of serve.

Ferrer 3-6 3-5 Nishikori. Break. An already tough game for Ferrer gets even tougher when he throws in a double fault to help Nishikori on his way to three more break points. The Spaniard saves the first with a huge inside out forehand right into the corner of the court that Nishikori can only get the frame of his racquet to as he chases down the backhand. But a forehand long on the second sees Ferrer concede his serve once more and Nishikori will serve for a two sets to love lead.
Ferrer 3-6 3-4 Nishikori. Nishikori guilty of being just a little casual in his latest service game but he gets away with it as Ferrer fails to successfully anticipate the cross court forehand from Nishikori. Still with serve after that initial trade of breaks at the beginning of this first set.
Ferrer 2-6 3-3 Nishikori. Another gruelling service hold from Ferrer sees him level once more and stick with Nishikori in this second set. But if there's one thing the Spaniard excels at it is sticking with his opponent a lot longer than anyone else with.
Ferrer 3-6 2-2 Nishikori. It's taken a while but Ferrer is finally starting to look like he's settled into this match. The Spaniard eases through a comfortable service hold, sealing the game with a booming forehand winner down the line to stick with Nishikori in this second set.
Ferrer 3-6 1-2 Nishikori. The fifth seed gets his serve back to where it was in the first set, racing through a comfortable hold whilst throwing in an ace just for good measure. Pressure back on Ferrer now.

Ferrer 3-6 1-1 Nishikori. A double fault also costs Ferrer as he hands Nishikori an immediate break back point. The fifth seed squanders his first attempt with another forehand error but gets a second chance with a forehand winner and this time he does break back to get things level once again.

Ferrer 3-6 1-0 Nishikori. Break. The slaps down his first double fault of the match as Ferrer suddenly finds himself on the right side of a break point. The Spaniard sils to take advantage of it, netting a forehand error. He gets a second chance but again squanders it with a huge forehand long down the line. A double fault costs Nishikori on game point before the forehand also breaks down with back-to-back errors handing Ferrer to break at the third attempt.

Ferrer 3-6 Nishikori. Set. Nishikori is all over the Ferrer serve and moves up the court with ease before flicking a dismissive backhand away across court for a winner and to wrap up the first set at the first time of asking.
Ferrer 3-5 Nishikori. Another very solid service game from Nishikori as he holds to 15 with a body serve that Ferrer can only return into the net off the backhand wing. The Spaniard now will have to serve to stay in this opening set.
