So defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka is through to the quarter-finals where he will face the winner between fifth seed Kei Nishikori and ninth seed David Ferrer.
Wawrinka 7-6(2) 6-4 4-6 7-6(8) Garcia-Lopez. Game, set and match. Wawrinka saves four set points, including one with a cross court forehand and one with a backhand passing shot winner down the line, to storm back in the breaker to then earn himself a match point. His backhand volley ends up going long and wide but he saves a fifth set point with some incredible speed, racing up to the net to flick a drop shot away for a winner. The defending champion earns himself another match point and this time he does take it when Garcia-Lopez goes long with an inside out forehand across court.
Wawrinka 7-6(2) 6-4 4-6 Garcia-Lopez. Set. What a quick turnaround. The momentum has completely shifted in this match since that poor game from Wawrinka allowed the Spaniard to break back. The defending champion pulls a forehand wide down the line after backing away from the ball to hand Garcia-Lopez two set points. But the Spaniard only needs the one, anticipating correctly the cross court forehand from Wawrinka and re-directing the ball down the line for a change-of-direction forehand winner.
Wawrinka 7-6(2) 6-4 4-4 Garcia-Lopez. Break.Wawrinka looked like he was cruising to a straight sets win at two sets to love and a break up but a slack game from the defending champion sees him double fault to gift the break back to Garcia-Lopez and put things back on serve in this third set.
Wawrinka 7-6(2) 6-4 Garcia-Lopez. Set. The defending champion is looking very comfortable now over on Margaret Court Arena as he serves out the second set to love with a huge first serve that the Spaniard can only return long.
Wawrinka 7-6(2) Garcia-Lopez. Set. A bad time for Garcia-Lopez's first double fault as it hands Wawrinka the mini-break lead at the change of ends in the this first set tie-break. From there the fourth seed cruises through the rest of the breaker, sealing the set without the loss of another point and sealing it with an ace.
Wawrinka 3-3 Garcia-Lopez. Break. Garcia-Lopez goes long with a wild backhand to gift Wawrinka three immediate break back points. The defending champion only needs the one though working his way up to the net and burying a easy backhand smash for a winner. Back on serve in this opening set.
Wawrinka 2-3 Garcia-Lopez. Break. Despite the defending champion holding early break points in the match, it is the Spaniard who gets the first breakthrough. A poor game from Wawrinka gifts Garcia-Lopez three break points. Although Wawrinka saves the first with a booming forehand down the line there is nothing he can do about the second, unleashing on a cross court backhand only to pull the ball wide wide.
We are going to continue to focus on the action taking place on Rod Laver Arena but stick with us here for live scoring and we will give you updates when we can from what promises to be an intriguing match-up on Margaret Court Arena.
These two have faced each other seven times before with Wawrinka just narrowly leading the head-to-heads with four wins to three. In fact Garcia-Lopez won their only meeting in 2014, at the French Open, while Wawrinka won their two 2013 meetings - on the clay of Casablanca and the grass of 's-Hertogenbosch.
