Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund stands on the brink of history as he prepares to face Marin Cilic for a place in the Australian Open final.

When Kyle Edmund walks out on to the Rod Laver arena it’s hard to imagine that many of the 15,000 packed in will have heard of Tickton.
A tiny village (seriously, it’s about a mile long) in East Yorkshire Tickton is unassuming, but it was the place a young Edmund called home after his family moved from South Africa when he was three.
Edmund, who is adept at most sports, only took up tennis at the age of 10 but by 16 he was competing for Britain’s junior boys side. In 2011 the team, coached by Eurosport’s Greg Rusedski, triumphed in the Summer Cup, Winter Cup and Davis Cup.
Now he is one game away from a debut Grand Slam final, where he could face the greatest of all time, Roger Federer.

Can Edmund beat Cilic?

Well, coming into the year Edmund had never beaten top-10 player. Then he dispatched the third best player in the world, Grigor Dimitrov, so he’s certainly got a chance.
Cilic is a Grand Slam winner but he’s often failed to stamp his authority on tournaments and he can be inconsistent.
However he was more than a match for Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals before the Spaniard’s injury and will feel this is the perfect opportunity for him to add another Slam.
Both players love using their powerful strokes but as The Coach Patrick Mouratoglou explains, Edmund will have to be wary of Cilic’s superior backhand.
“To have a chance in this match Edmund will have to take control of the rallies by being very aggressive on the first strike.”
However, Edmund’s aggressive returns could work on his favour with Cilic sometimes unsettled when he’s put under pressure.
Furthermore, all the expectations will be on Cilic, something that tends not to suit him, whilst Edmund has so far been unfazed by everything that has come his way.

Have they played each other before?

Yes, once. They played just a few months ago in October at the Shanghai Masters. Cilic won the match in straight sets.

What they’re saying about him

Eurosport pundits Annabel Croft and Greg Rusedski believe that a change in mentality is one of the biggest factors in Edmund’s rise.
“He’s almost robotic in how he’s going about his business,” said Croft in the Eurosport studio.
“He’s just got that mindset now, he believes he belongs with the very best. In the past he questioned that.” Rusedski added.
And of course he’s got the support of the biggest name in British tennis, Andy Murray, who Edmund could actually usurp as British No. 1 if he reaches the final.
Federer spoke about how impressed he has been with both Edmund and fellow Grand Slam semi-final debutant Chung Hyeon.
Edmund even found time for a quick chat with Gordon Ramsey!

What about the man himself?

Well he’s certainly aiming high.
“There’s no point celebrating a quarter-final. You only celebrate when you win the tournament and that’s my goal.”
He also told Eurosport’s Catherine Whitaker and Mats Wilander that he is always going to try and play aggressively as that is his natural game.
