Hello and welcome to LIVE updates of the 2022 Australian Open final between Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. The legendary Spaniard has his eyes on a record 21st Grand Slam title after surprising everyone with a brilliant run in Melbourne on the back of an uncertain spell on the side-lines through injury. Standing in his way, is world number two, Medvedev who is aiming to snare his second major after lifting the 2021 US Open title. It could well be a thriller with both players are due on court from 08.30 GMT.

NADAL 2-6 5-5 MEDVEDEV. Daniil shows brilliant touch at the net as he closes out a rapid hold to 15 to move all square. He’ll fancy his chances of taking this set now.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-6 5-4 MEDVEDEV. That’s a tough one for Nadal to take. He finds a huge serve to open but inexplicably slaps an overhead into the net. A nervy forehand then loops way off court and he gives himself a mountain to climb. Medvedev puts away a volley for two break back points – but Nadal roars back to save both. The Spaniard ends up saving four and has a set point swatted away before Medvedev breaks back at the fifth opportunity to edge an epic and enthralling game.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-6 5-3 MEDVEDEV. The pendulum swings once more! Medvedev’s first serve goes AWOL and Nadal pounces. A clever, low slice forces an error for a break point and when Medvedev slips trying to defend a big forehand, the Spaniard adjusts with a smart drop shot. He will serve for the set – but given his travails so far, that could prove a tough ask.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-6 4-3 MEDVEDEV. Daniil puts the skids on Nadal’s revival. The Spaniard continues to struggle to find first serves often enough and pays the price. Medvedev sets the tone with a scorching backhand down the line and is just too solid in the rallies as he breaks to 15.

NADAL 2-6 4-2 MEDVEDEV. That’s a statement of intent in response from Daniil. He rediscovers his big first serve and darts through a simple love hold.

NADAL 2-6 4-1 MEDVEDEV. That’s the perfect way to consolidate. Nadal nails his first ace of the match and then swats away a delightful volley to notch up a love hold.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-6 3-1 MEDVEDEV. Hold the phone! Nadal lures a pair of surprising errors out of Medvedev and senses an opportunity. The 20-time Slam champion produces a sublime short, angled slice to win an epic 40-shot rally to clock up two BPs. Medvedev saves one with a sixth ace of the contest but then blasts long once more. Nadal has the edge in Set 2 – but can he find solutions to be more efficient on his own service games?

NADAL 2-6 2-1 MEDVEDEV. Superb battling from Nadal. He finds a rare big serve at 30-30 and then unloads a series of blistering forehands before luring an error long.

NADAL 2-6 1-1 MEDVEDEV. Medvedev slaps down his fifth ace of the game before easily clinching a hold with a simple put-away at the net. There’s no suggestion this pattern is going to change.

NADAL 2-6 1-0 MEDVEDEV. Nadal’s forehand once again explodes into life at the start of a set and he works hard to find a hold to 30. He needs to start landing more first serves if he’s to make a match of this.

'What an amazing rally' - Medvedev blasts winner after 26-shot battle

SET! – NADAL 2-6 MEDVEDEV. Rampant. Medvedev serves it out to 15 with the minimum of fuss and takes a hugely one-sided opener in 42 minutes. Nadal needs a big response now, but it’s going to need a spectacular change in the pattern for him to make any impact.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-5 MEDVEDEV. Wow. This set is over! Medvedev has all the answers and Nadal coughs up another break to love with a volley long. He just can’t breach the Russian’s defences.

'Weapon in play' - Nadal begins match with huge winner to delight fans in final

NADAL 2-4 MEDVEDEV. Too good. Nadal unloads the forehand to huge cheers but it’s not enough as Medvedev once again proves dominant and consolidates to 30.

BREAK! - NADAL 2-3 MEDVEDEV. It’s been coming. Medvedev continues to cause Rafa all sorts of trouble on serve. The Spaniard pays the price for leaving a scooped pass that drops in for 0-30 and there’s no denying the world number two this time as he breaks to love.

NADAL 2-2 MEDVEDEV. It’s another much more routine hold for Medvedev. Nadal lures an error with a low slice for 30-30 but Medvedev continues to dictate and whistles through the next two points, signing off with another wide ace.
