GAME, SET AND MATCH! - KERBER 6-2 6-3 HADDAD MAIA. The 2016 champion and world number two serves the match out to 15, sealing it in one hour and 21 minutes by out-lasting the Brazilian underdog in a pulsating concluding rally. The German roars into round three and is very much a contender for this year's title on this evidence.

BREAK! - KERBER 6-2 5-3 HADDAD MAIA. And there it is! Kerber lures a wild error out of Bia on break point and will now serve for the match.
KERBER 6-2 4-3 HADDAD MAIA. Angie responds with a similarly confident hold to 15 as we enter the business end of the set. Any blink from Bia now would surely be curtains...

KERBER 6-2 3-3 HADDAD MAIA. This is a much more competitive set as Bia holds to love. She doesn't appear to be under the cosh as much and some of those avoidable errors are landing in.
KERBER 6-2 3-2 HADDAD MAIA. Angie roars in delight as she counter punches in trademark style to turn around a ding-dong rally and edge back in front after letting a 40-0 lead get rather edgy.
KERBER 6-2 2-2 HADDAD MAIA. A trio of forehand winners do the business as Haddad Maia moves level once more, dropping just the one point, with arguably her most convincing hold so far.
KERBER 6-2 2-1 HADDAD MAIA. Bia's eyes light up as she benefits from Kerber's weakest service game so far to tee up a first break point. However, she is over-eager and overcooks two forehands to give Angie the advantage and the world number two wastes little time in seizing the reprieve.
KERBER 6-2 1-1 HADDAD MAIA. Kerber corks a lovely backhand winner and Bia could be forgiven for thinking 'here we go again' at 30-30. But the Brazilian stays competitive and forces errors off either flank from the German to get herself on the board.
KERBER 6-2 1-0 HADDAD MAIA. New set, same old Kerber. Angie rushes to a love hold to immediately claim the scoreboard advantage.

KERBER 5-2 HADDAD MAIA. Kerber was visibly and understandably frustrated by her inability to convert on so many break points, but she doesn't let that impact upon her service game. She rattles through another convincing hold to move within a game of the opening set.
Elsewhere....
KERBER 4-2 HADDAD MAIA. At times Bia is fighting against herself. She double faults and leaks a plethora of unforced errors off both flanks. It inevitably sees her cough up break points, but she digs her heels in to stave off no fewer than SIX before somehow wriggling her way to a hard-fought hold. Just the 15 minutes that game.
KERBER 4-1 HADDAD MAIA. The 2016 champion retorts with a rapid-fire hold to love to stay on course to take this opener. The German has remained focused and composed so far against an opponent who continues to battle hard.
KERBER 3-1 HADDAD MAIA. Bia is on the board! The world number 176 had to work hard once more after seeing a 40-15 lead snatched away. An ace at deuce put her in control before Angie slapped a backhand into the net in what proved to be the concluding rally.
KERBER 3-0 HADDAD MAIA. Angie will be delighted with this start. She consolidates with a game to 30.
Meanwhile, over on 1573 Arena...

BREAK! - KERBER 2-0 HADDAD MAIA. That was gutsy tennis from Haddad Maia - but in the end she comes up short. The underdog, nicknamed Bia, looked in control at 30-0 but Kerber worked her back into it to really turn the screw. A wonderful drop shot and a clinical volley at the net helped the Brazilian fend off two break points in real style. Kerber kept pressing and finally got her reward on her fifth opportunity as, this time, Haddad Maia's drop shot tactic failed to pay off.
