A finalist here two years ago, Simona Halep kicks off her Australian Open campaign against Jennifer Brady. Let's go!

The first set was far from easy but Simona Halep is through, beating Jennifer Brady 7-6(5), 6-1. There will be some concerns about a nasty fall which saw her hurt her wrist but she got the win and now face either Harriet Dart or Misaki Doi.

Is that the match for Halep? She has a double break in the second and will be confident of coming through against Brady, having had to work very hard so far.

Halep was feeling her wrist after winning the first set but it hasn't adversely affected her efforts at the start of the second as she gets a break.

Halep wins the first set! She's had to battle, with Brady twice moving a break ahead and the Romanian needing some treatment but she's scraped through.

To a tie-break we go as Halep breaks Brady when the American was serving for the set at 6-5… Who will prevail in the breaker and go a set up?

Just as it looked as though Halep was moving into a position of dominance in the first set, Brady breaks again and will now be serving for it! Halep needed a medical time out too, so concerning signs for the 2018 finalist.

And Halep is back on terms! The Romanian has the break back and will suddenly be thinking about winning this set, rather than simply staying in it.

Simona Halep's rebuilding job is under way. Returning at 2-1 down, she skipped into a 0-30 lead but failed to capitalise and it's gone on serve since. Brady leads 4-2 and this set is progressing fairly rapidly.

Is there an upset brewing? Halep has suffered a nightmare start, losing the first two games and Brady is well in this contest.
