Edmund impresses again
Kyle Edmund enjoyed another impressive outing at the Australian Open as he moved into the third round with a confident 6-2 6-2 6-4 win over Denis Istomin. Edmund reaches the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time and faces Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili in an eminently winnable encounter.
Sensational comeback saves Wozniacki
Number two seed Caroline Wozniacki staged a stunning comeback from 5-1 down in the third set to defeat word number 119 Jana Fett 3-6 6-2 7-5. She had to save two match points at 5-1 down in the third set before digging deep and going on a run of six consecutive games to take the win.
Tsonga sees off Shapovalov in classc
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came back from 5-2 down in the final set to beat the brilliant young Denis Shapovalov in five enthralling sets at the Australian Open, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Shapovalov looked poised for victory at 5-2 in the fifth, but Tsonga orchestrated an amazing comeback to win the final five games, and the match. Nick Kyrgios awaits if he can beat Viktor Troicki later on Wednesday.
Teenager Kostyuk makes waves
Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine became the youngest player to reach the third round of a Grand Slam in over 20 years following a 6-3 7-5 win over Olivia Rogowska at the Australian Open. She is the youngest player to reach a Grand Slam third round since Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the 1997 US Open. Martina Hingis reached the quarter-finals in Australia as a 15-year-old in 1996.
Svitolina battles through
Fourth seed Elina Svitolina had to fight the heat and an early setback as she came through to beat Katerina Siniakova 4-6 6-2 6-1 in the second round of the Australian Open. Svitolina dropped a fiercely contested first set but battled back as her previously impressive opponent began to fade.
Carreno Busta gets easy ride
Men’s 10th seed Pablo Carreno Busta was the first player into the third round of the Australian Open after Gilles Simon retired injured in their match on Wednesday. Carreno Busta was 6-3 3-0 up on the Frenchman, who had strapping on his leg and could not continue.
Pavlyuchenkova crashes out
Fifteenth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia lost to Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-3 to go crashing out of the competition.
Big disappointment for Bencic
Belinda Bencic enjoyed one of the results of the first round when knocking out last year's losing finalist Venus Williams, but she was surprisingly undone 6-1 6-3 by Thai qualifier and world number 124 Luksika Kumkhum.
Cilic cruises
Sixth seed Marin Cilic encountered few problems as he defeated Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-1 7-5 6-2.
