Cast your mind back to 1986. Ronald Reagan was President of the United States, nightclub revellers were demanding DJs play Berlin’s ‘Take My Breath Away’, and hit new game show Catchphrase was taking the UK by storm. Oh, and Great Britain reached the last eight of the Davis Cup before succumbing to Australia on the pristine lawns of Wimbledon. Flash forward 28 years to the present day, and that quarter-final appearance remains Britain’s last. But will that change today?

GAME, SET AND MATCH! What’s this? The American crowd go ballistic as a Murray shot is called out on the baseline at 15-15, but surely that clipped the line? Yep, the chair umpire backs up the Brit’s protests and we’ll replay the point. Querrey hits back by taking the point anyway and all of a sudden has two break-back points as Murray throws in an untimely double fault. The Wimbledon champion responds in stunning fashion, winning three straight points to bring up match point… He’s done it!

GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 5-3 USA – Can Murray win it on his opponent’s serve? Well, he forces a match point in deuce but can’t quite cross the line. Attention turns to the next game…
-
GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 5-2 USA – It’s the classic cliché, but Murray is reading Querrey like a book. He’s chasing down every single shot and sending it back with pace. The Brit is one game away from securing the tie!

GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 4-2 USA – Hmmm. Murray rockets a pretty makeable short ball beyond the baseline and instead of 0-30 it’s 15-15. He responds in perfect fashion, reeling off the next two points and exchanging a victorious glare with Leon Smith. And he saves the best until last, playing an absurd defensive lob to get into the point before beating the American with a series of precise shots. That should be that.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 3-2 USA – Querrey sends a return steaming over the net and is shocked when it flies straight back past him. But not as shocked as he is when Murray executes an audacious lob to perfection. Delightful hold.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 2-2 USA – Decent serving from the American as he bags a love service game.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 2-1 USA – Murray finds some first serves and seals a straight-forward game via a fortuitous bounce off the net-cord.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 1-1 USA – Word has clearly got out that there’s an exciting match unfolding in San Diego as the empty seats now have bottoms on them. Querrey has rediscovered his second set-self and holds to love.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 6-1 1-0 USA – Murray shows incredible defence to bash a near-impossible ball back into play at 15-15, but Querrey is responsive to his opponent’s talents and, undeterred, smashes his next shot beyond the reach of the Brit. And what’s this? Murray suffers a mental lapse and hands his opponent two break points. Don’t get too excited though, American fans – Murray reels off four straight points to save the situation.

MURRAY WINS THIRD SET 6-1! It’s just a question now of how long Querrey can prolong the inevitable as thoughts turn to the fourth set. Murray earns himself a set point at 30-40 but can do nothing as a huge Querrey forehand brings up deuce. The Brit hoists his t-shirt into his mouth and chews in frustration as he passes up a second opportunity but it’s not long before a third chance is presented. That’s saved too! How about chance number four? Yep, that will do. Querrey nets. GB are one set away.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 5-1 USA – Murray moves Querrey left, then right, then left again – firing his shots with remarkable precision – before his opponent, at risk of exhaustion, is forced to go for an outrageous winner. It’s out by miles and Murray proceeds to race through the game. Leon Smith warmly applauds.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 4-1 USA – Querrey is starting to look a little tight out there but he does enough to hold.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 4-0 USA – It’s pitiless hitting from Murray as he attempts to add to his opponent’s woes with a series of big shots, but Querrey digs in to get to 30-30. Another well-worked point provides game point for the Brit and a booming serve down the middle is hit meekly out of court by the battered American. Bagel time?

GB 7-6 6-7 3-0 USA – Has the American lost a chink of his mental armour? It certainly looks so as Murray opens up a 0-30 lead. Querrey responds briefly but can only exercise his neck muscles as Murray plays an outrageous double-handed backhand down the line to bring up two break points (and, you would guess, effective set points). The Brit takes his first opportunity. Querrey looks crushed.
-
GB 7-6 6-7 2-0 USA – That’s exactly what Murray, not to mention Leon Smith, James Ward and the rest of the British contingent needed – a love hold.

GB 7-6 6-7 1-0 USA – The pair engage in a rather peculiar drop shot battle in the second point of the third set, Querrey eventually triumphing when Murray finds the net. The Brit recovers to 30-30 before exploiting a slight slip from his opponent to bring up break point. How are your nerves, Sam? Initially not too bad, but he’s soon in trouble again and this time Murray takes full advantage. “Come on now”, utters the rejuvenated Brit. We have a break!

QUERREY WINS SECOND SET 7-6! After a set of imperious serving, the pair exchange mini breaks at the dawn of the tie-break before, belatedly, Querrey serves out a point for a 2-1 lead. The American harnesses the momentum to seize a 4-2 advantage at the change of ends and shows no signs of slowing as he takes the next two points to bring up four set points. Set point no.1: Murray survives. Set point no.2: Querrey pounces on a short ball and lashes it past Murray. Time to pop your kit on, Mr Ward..

GB 7-6 6-6 USA - Murray berates himself for an untimely unforced error after building a foothold in the game at 15-15. Ultimately, game number 12 of the second set will be remembered for one of the worst volleys in Davis Cup history from Murray. Querrey holds.
-
GB 7-6 6-5 USA – Murray absolutely loves a fist clench and a yelp of ‘come on’. He performs the combo twice in as many points as he flies into a 40-0 lead before taking the game with the very next point. It’s 11 straight points on serve for the lad.
-
GB 7-6 5-5 USA – Has the American got the bottle to stay in this contest? Short answer: yes. Long answer: yes, he holds comfortably to 15.
