The first is scuppered by a poor return, the second by the beautiful contrast of Golubev’s ballistic groundstrokes followed by a sickly sweet dropshot. However, a later third is Murray’s as bullies Golubev at the net and slinks the passing shot by his hapless opponent.

Golubev continues to radiate with confidence, combining well-dispatched serves with brutal forehands including a final hammer blow from that side to seal the set. Still up two sets to one, Murray won’t panic but he’ll undoubtedly be looking to end this affair as soon as possible.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-5 GOLUBEV. Murray quickly slinks to a 40-0 lead before Golubev comes bouncing back. However, a service winner is all he needs to secure his service game and leave Golubev to attempt to serve it all out.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 2-3 GOLUBEV. BREAK! After working so hard to establish his lead, Golubev somewhat throws it all away with a combination of errors followed by a double fault to single-handedly drag Murray back level on serve.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-3 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Suddenly, Golubev is flying and unleashes a series of forehands infused with deft dropshots to find himself up break points. As the pair deliberate between break points and gamepoints and the stalemate of deuce, it is Golubev who rises to snatch another break and his third game in succession.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-2 GOLUBEV. Golubev quickly finds himself up game point, only to stutter and net a backhand. Murray then finds himself up break point, only for Golubev to come screaming back. When the dust has settled, it is Golubev who struts to his chair victorious with more strong forehands and a third set lead.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-1 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Golubev immediately finds himself up 0-30 on Murray’s serve with a sitter of a forehand to strike back immediately. He misses the forehand, but a long Murray backhand presents him with a double break point lifeline. The first is snuffed out with some miraculous defence from Murray, who glides from pillar to post only to offer up the break with a woefully netted forehand in the very next game.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-0 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Boom! A searing, red-hot running backhand passing shot from Murray is enough for him to steal the break and put him happily (though not smilingly) on his way. He leads by two sets and a break.

MURRAY 6-1 6-4 GOLUBEV. SET! The crucial hold demands a little elbow grease as Murray immediately falls down 15-30, but some typical netted forehands from Golubev are enough to offer Murray the set and a two-set lead.

MURRAY 6-1 5-4 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Murray quickly roars back to a 15-30 lead, which is equalled with a strong forehand winner. The game looks to be going Golubev’s way at game point, but an unforced error and two stratospheric shanks send the Scot strutting straight for his seat. He'll serve for the set.
