Hope you all enjoyed that. I certainly did. Riveting and fascinating stuff. Monfils makes a sheepish exit from Philippe Chatrier. Murray lives to fight another day and will face Nadal in the semis. See you there.

Monfils won just 6 points in that set. Quite extraordinary under any circumstances, but when you've just come back from two sets down, when all the momentum is with you, when the crowd are going wild for you, when you're opponent is down in the dumps, it is simply inexplicable.

GAME SET AND MATCH ANDY MURRAY! 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-6 6-0. Murray produces a quality drop shot on the opening point then finds successive forehand winners to bring up three match points at 0-40. Monfils looks shellshocked. Murray goes huge on the return but goes wildly long. Monfils, though, does it for him on the second match point. finding the net yet again. Game over. Can anyone make sense of that fifth set?

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-6 5-0 MONFILS. We how up and down Monfils can be when he went the distance against Fognini. This implosion is incredible, though. We thought the fifth set would be damage limitation for Murray but he's cruising through these games with consumate ease. He's one game away. Monfils to serve to stay in the tournament.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-6 4-0 MONFILS. Can anyone explain this?! Monfils has gone to pieces! The errors continue to flow from his racquet and he is now contributing equally to his own downfall. At 0-40 he saves two break points but goes long again on the third. Extraordinary. It's all in Murray's hands now.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-6 3-0 MONFILS. How the shape of these matches twist and turn! Everything was going Monfils' way. He was making all his shots. Murray looked weary, his was hitting errors when once he was hitting winners. It looked like this fifth set might only go one way. But somehow Murray has found a new injection of energy, of heart. Monfils is missing now, Murray no more. The Brit is as fired up as the Frenchman was when he levelled the match. 3-0 now. Great stuff.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-6 2-0 MONFILS. And raise his level he does!! He's got two break points and races to the net to put away a backhand volley emphatically, before almost dropping to his knees such is the scale of his fist pump. Another twist. What a match this is!

Night is closing in but not quickly enough for Murray to try and employ delaying tactics in an effort to get off court. He needs to raise his level now, and right now.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-6 1-0 MONFILS. Monfils takes 0-15 but then misses a crosscourt forehand slider that he'd usually make in his sleep. Murray dumps a tired forehand into the net but when Monfils fails to pass him he ditches the moaning and goes for a fist pump and a "come on". It's the same again when he seals the game thanks to a long Monfils forehand. Is he getting himself up for the fight?

As we head deeper into the Parisien evening, the issue of light arises. Murray wants the referee on to discuss it. He wants to walk off now. Anything to halt this Monfils onslaught. You're not getting out of it that easily, mate, he's told. We're starting the fifth set. This is huge.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-5 MONFILS. Incredible stuff! Murray's implosion continues apace. Monfils hits a string of unforced errors and we're soon at 40-15, but Murray can't close it out. Instead he hits his own string of unforced errors, netting backhands that earlier gave him so much joy. Murray's manner is weary, his errors are criminal. Monfils has a double break and surely has the fourth set in the bag.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-4 MONFILS. Momentum. Strange isn't it? It is well and truly on the side of Gael Monfils at the moment and we could be heading for a fifth set. It's a love service game for Monfils and it raises more gesticulation from Murray, who's head is down. He's going to pieces.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-3 MONFILS. Fortune favours the brave and an audacious forehand return comes off for Monfils on the opening point. Murray shows composure to put away volleys at 0-15 and 15-30 and at 30-30 he finds a much-needed big first serve. But when he's stranded way behind the baseline, Monfils drops the simplest of chipped forehands and Murray misses long for break point. Murray is then on the back foot and he misses long again. Well long. He smacks his thigh with his racquet.
-
MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-2 MONFILS. Monfils comes up with a comfortable hold. This certainly isn't the Monfils of the first two sets. Neither is it the Murray of the first two sets.
-
MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 1-1 MONFILS. Murray plays a lovely slice volley and Monfils almost gets it up for a winner. That would have been special. As it is, Murray finds another backhand down the line winner and Monfils hits another unforced error to make it 40-0. Murray isn't interested in running down a drop shot and instead gets the job done at 40-15.
-
MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 0-1 MONFILS. Monfils knows how to work a crowd and an outrageous drop shot from deep is certain to get a Roland Garros crowd purring. Murray finds a couple of winners but Monfils' confidence is running high and he too finds a forehand winner before sending down an ace to wrap up the opening game of the fourth set.
-
Obviously not good from Murray's point of view but that was the best thing that could have happened to the match in terms of a contest. Monfils has renewed belief, the crowd are on his side. We have a real match on our hands now.

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-6 MONFILS. The crowd go wild! Monfils is right back in this! A huge "ALLEZ!!!" from the Frenchman greets a long Murray forehand that brings up two set points. The excitement gets to him, though, and he spanks his return long on the first and puts a simple forehand into the net on the second. Murray concedes a third set point and, off balance, finds the net. Monfils is fired up. We're heading for a fourth set, and who knows which way this match is now heading!

MURRAY 6-4 6-1 4-5 MONFILS. Murray does a Monfils and laughs helplessly at himself when he makes another unforced error. Monfils comes out with an inside-out crosscourt forehand winner that is simply brutal. It's the biggest shot of the match and the crowd love it. Monfils closes his service game out comfortably, and whips the crowd up with his celebrations. Big pressure now on Murray, he has to serve to stay in the set.
