So it looks like the next match up on the Phillipe Chatrier court will be Novak Djokovic in 15 minutes. We hope very much to see you then.

Such a shame for Tsonga - a player who many might argue had never truly met his potential - who was playing really well. A difficult decision for him to make, no doubt.
After a short break, Tsonga has returned to the court to retire from the tournament. He had been wining the first set by 5-2. It's obviously very emotional for the Frenchman who appears to be in tears as he leaves the court.
Tsonga becomes our second casualty of the tournament after Rafael Nadal's surprise retirement yesterday.
Right, well that was quick...

GULBIS 2-5 TSONGA: Again, Gulbis is making Tsonga work - but he's had plenty of opportunities to break Tsonga's serve and ultimately failed to do it. Tsonga does look a bit hacked off about something, however, and I'm not quite sure what... His knee perhaps? Which a member of his team is now clutching. Tsonga has taken a stroll off court perhaps for some medical attention?

GULBIS 2-4 TSONGA: Tsonga was racing away there but Gulbis is pretty nifty up at the net and catches the sixth seed out a couple of times to creep ahead of him and take the game. Tsonga still has a comfortable lead and serves next.

GULBIS 1-4 TSONGA: Gulbis looked like he was going to break right back again and he certainly made Tsonga work for that with some cheeky shots, but for someone with such a strong physical presence as Tsonga, he looks really quite agile on court. A very solid start for the Frenchman.

GULBIS 1-3 TSONGA: An early break by Tsonga, beautifully done as Gulbis get's up to the net to catch him out with a drop shot but Tsonga is ready for him and slices a backhand across the court past Gulbis. Lovely stuff.

GULBIS 1-2 TSONGA: Tsonga holds onto his serve, but this could easily not have been the case as he came pretty close there and was saved by Gulbis' errors more than his own defence.

GULBIS 1-1 TSONGA: There are some boos and jeers as we establish whether or not Gulbis was out. He most certainly was but did little to help him as the Latvian took him to a deuce and managed to reclaim his serve. Still very much in the warm-up phase, here.

GULBIS 0-1 TSONGA: The Frenchman made light work of his first service to take the first game.
Tsonga to serve first...
Tsonga is the sixth seed in this competition, while Gulbis is ranked 80th. That said, he did knock out 26th seeded Joao Sousa in the second round.
