"Yesterday I had a bit of momentum when we stopped...Both of us had chances in the fifth set," he adds. "I fought extremely hard today and I get the chance to play again tomorrow."

"He's always been extremely difficult to play. He was serving well and hardly missed any volleys until the one on match point...I wasn't in a great rhythm and that's credit to him and the way that he played," he says.

"It was unbelievable, what he's doing. He had an extremely bad injury last year and still coming out, fighting like that, playing that was - it's unbelievable to be able to do that. I don't expect to be doing that myself at that age. I was just glad to get through," says Murray.

The pair hug at the net, and Murray applauds his opponent who acknowledges the ovation from the crowd.

The rhythmic clapping of the Chatrier crowd is to motivate Stepanek - who after all that just returns into the net at match point.

Whistles and boos for a bunch of latecomers, holding up the Murray serve.

Stepanek 6-3 6-3 0-6 3-6 5-6 Murray: That's the break Andy Murray needed! He shouts loudly if slightly incoherently, a mixture of aggression and relief, and Stepanek is making too many mistakes now his serve is under so much pressure.

Stepanek 6-3 6-3 0-6 3-6 5-5 Murray: A smack into the net by Stepanek at 30-30 sets off the Murray roar - in relief as well as motivation for his serve. But Stepanek knows the net is usually his friend, moving up quickly to drag back to deuce - then loses the advantage at the net as he tries to go across the court. Murray serves down at maximum power and holds.

Stepanek 6-3 6-3 0-6 3-6 5-4 Murray: There's a little smirk on Stepanek's face as he forces Murray to lose his footing and then bamboozles him with a drop shot followed by an ace to hold to love.

Stepanek 6-3 6-3 0-6 3-6 4-4 Murray: Andy Murray does a bit of his own fist-pumping but he can only lure begrudging applause out of the crowd.

Stepanek 6-3 6-3 0-6 3-6 4-3 Murray: The crowd are geeing Stepanek up after he gives away a needless point to Murray with a double fault. Even so, he still nets a forehand to gift Murray deuce. Then he takes the advantage and clenches his fist right at Murray - which he does again as he wins the game.

Stepanek 6-3 6-3 0-6 3-6 3-3 Murray: That's a great and simple hold for Murray, who needs to gird himself up to go at the Stepanek serve once more.
