Nadal continued in French: "It's incredible. No-body can explain it. It was a dream to play back in 2005 when I won it for the first time and it's continued to be a dream. Thank you everyone for your support."

Nadal improves his head-to-head record against Thiem to 9-4. The pretender to the throne remains the Prince of Clay and seemed to run out of gas in the end. His epic with Djokovic in the semis could well have played a part.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 THIEM. Long live the King! Nadal serves it out with a game to 30 on his second match point after a superb three hours and one minute of tennis. The Spaniard becomes the first player to win 12 singles titles at one Grand Slam and takes his overall haul to 18 - two behind Federer (20) and three ahead of Djokovic (15). He stretches his winning record at RG to 93-2.

BREAK! - NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 5-1 THIEM. Rafa strikes again! He cranks up the heat to make deuce after just missing a backhand pass down the line for a break point. Thiem blows a forehand long to cough one up but survives it when his volley on the stretch dances on the top of the net before dropping over. A tired slice offers the Spaniard a second bite and this time he watches in delight as Thiem blasts a forehand well wide. Nadal will now serve for the title.
NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 4-1 THIEM. Too good. Nadal outlasts Thiem in a bruising rally at 15-15 and it proves to be key as he motors through the next two points to stay in the driving seat.

NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 3-1 THIEM. That's a huge hold. Two vintage winners down both wings and a tired Thiem forehand tee up triple break point for Nadal. The Austrian responds with aces five and six down the middle T and a simple forehand winner. He races to the net to slap away a smash before getting out of dodge when Rafa loops a crosscourt forehand wide. That was massive and keeps him in the match.
NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 3-0 THIEM. Close, but not close enough for the pretender to the throne. Thiem sweeps crosscourt winners off both flanks to earn another break point. Nadal saves it with a big wide serve and then has to do it again as the Austrian refuses to go away. The Spaniard changes tact by moving to the net and duly pulls off a massive hold to consolidate.

BREAK! - NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 2-0 THIEM. Domi leaks errors all over the show. Not even a gift from Nadal when he fails to put away a routine forehand can lift the Austrian as he's broken to 15.
NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 1-0 THIEM. That was sloppy play all round. Nadal looks in control at 30-0 but allows a tired-looking Thiem back in with a trio of errors. The Austrian has a break point but allows Nadal to wrestle back control when he skews a forehand long. The King of Clay then swoops in at the net to power in a volley and wriggle free of danger.

SET! - NADAL 6-3 5-7 6-1 THIEM. The Austrian number four seed feels the heat once more as Nadal crunches a sumptuous backhand winner and a trademark forehand to tee up set point. Thiem then lashes a backhand into the net and Nadal regains the lead by dishing out a comprehensive Set 3 drubbing. Domi has to take the breadstick and must now regroup big time if he's to take this the distance.

NADAL 6-3 5-7 5-1 THIEM. Rafa moves to within a game of taking Set 3. A crisp forehand winner up the line, a howitzer of a wide serve and a crosscourt belter off the backhand clinch a perfect hold.

NADAL 6-3 5-7 4-1 THIEM. Domi stops the rot as a stonking crosscourt forehand winner claims a much-needed hold to love.
