GAME SET AND MATCH MARIA SHARAPOVA! It's a double bagel 6-0 6-0! She breaks to love, of course, in a set that took just 21 minutes. I can't remember the last time Ormaechea won a point. I think everyone's glad that's over - so one sided it was just cruel.
SHARAPOVA 6-0 5-0 ORMAECHEA. The applause for Sharapova as she wins another game to love is almost muted. The crowd are clearly uneasy about witnessing such a mauling. I bet Ormaechea wants to just hide under her towel and disappear. No sympathy from Sharapova, who is remorselessly getting the job done.

SHARAPOVA 6-0 4-0 ORMAECHEA. Guess what - Sharapova has broken her again. Guess what - she's done it to love. Ormaechea just cannot live with the power.
SHARAPOVA 6-0 3-0 ORMAECHEA. If this was a boxing fight, the referee would have stopped it by now. Ormaechea is getting bloodied and battered. Sharapova dominates every rally and Ormaechea is just setting her up for winners.

SHARAPOVA 6-0 2-0 ORMAECHEA. Sharapova breaks to 15 with a stunning crosscourt forehand winner from wide. It's just too easy.
SHARAPOVA 6-0 1-0 ORMAECHEA. Meanwhile, Sharapova cruises into the lead in this second set.

Some statistical support for my last comment: Ormaechea has won ZERO points behind her second serve.

SHARAPOVA 6-0 ORMAECHEA. It is indeed a bagel. Ormaechea's second serve is getting absolutely abused here. She is hitting the ball quite well when she gets a first serve in but Sharapova is going after that second serve every time. This could be/already is embarrassing.

Sharapova has won 20 of the last 25 points.
SHARAPOVA 5-0 ORMAECHEA. The assault continues and this is ridiculously one sided. Can Ormaechea avoid the bagel?

SHARAPOVA 4-0 ORMAECHEA. Double break for Sharapova and she achieves it with consumate ease, winning the game to love. She's just picking off Ormaechea at every turn.
SHARAPOVA 3-0 ORMAECHEA. The Russian is all over her Ormaechea here, spraying the ball around at will. The Argentine just needs to dig in and play her way back into this set before it completely slips away.

SHARAPOVA 2-0 ORMAECHEA. The number 7 seed comes out shrieking and all guns blazing. She moves to 15-40, sees one break point saved and then runs round a second serve to unleash a forehand winner that is just monstruous.
SHARAPOVA 1-0 ORMAECHEA. Sharapova plays it safe and pats some meek first serves over. She fends off a couple of break points, crunches a forehand to take advantage and then winds up a serve up which doesn't come back.
Here we go then. We only got to deuce on the Sharapova serve before the rain came down, so we'll recommence from there. Remember that she has committed 3 doubles already. What are the chances of another one now?

The players have just walked back out onto court Philippe Chatrier. We should be back underway shortly.
The players are off court, the covers are on, and this looks like a proper rain delay - not the 'let's put a brolly up and wait and see' variety.
Rain stops play! The match has barely got going but it's already been suspened while the rain subsides. It's distracted somewaht from Maria Sharapova's three (yes three) double faults (and counting) so far this opening game. Absolutely criminal.

Sharapova's opponent today is 21 year old Argentine Paula Ormaechea, who's ranked 75 in the world. She came through in three sets against Monica Niculescu in the 2nd round, but has never faced Sharapova on the professional tour. It would indeed be another big upset were she to win today.

Li Na, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska. Is Maria Sharapova the next name in that sequence? The early rounds have savaged the women's draw of the French Open this year and if Sharapova can make sure she doesn't add herself to the casualties then the draw will open up nicely for her.
