Game Set and Match Maria Sharapova! 7-5 6-2. She well and truly goes after Pironkova on the return, bringing up three match points and finishing it off at the second time of asking. A straight sets win for the 7th seed but Pironkova made sure it wasn't a straight forward one.
18:15
SHARAPOVA 7-5 5-2. The Russian turns the screw. Having been called out by the umpire for a time violation she responds by thumping down a second serve ace and then wraps up the game to move to within four points of victory.

SHARAPOVA 7-5 4-2. Fantastic movement from Sharapova as she slides into a couple of groundstrokes and finds some remarkable angles to bring up two break points on the Pironkova serve. She converts at the first time of asking with a beautiful crosscourt backhand winner.
18:09
SHARAPOVA 7-5 3-2. Sharapova is looking the stronger of the two at the moment and lets out a "Come on!" with a clenched fist as a Pironkova forehand sails long to make it 3-2 in the second set.
18:04
SHARAPOVA 7-5 2-2. It's not vintage tennis. The blustery conditions are making life difficult out there but both women are slugging along on serve.
17:59
SHARAPOVA 7-5 2-1. Neither of them look happy out there. Sharapova looks annoyed to have been taken to 40-30 and then proceeds to bludgeon the ball with a vengeance until the Pironkova defence finally gives way.
17:55
SHARAPOVA 7-5 1-1. Pironkova plays a blinding point to go 15-0 and then struggles her way to a hold, with a couple of grimaces and hip clutches thrown in there.
17:51
SHARAPOVA 7-5 1-0. A love service game for Sharapova to kick off the second set. That's three games on the bounce now. Let's hope Pironkova can put up a fight here.
17:48
Pironkova is okay to continue and jogs back out to receive serve in the opening game of the second set.
17:46
Pironkova is on the floor at the moment receiving treatment and it seems the target of the massage is around the top of the thigh and hip area on her left hand side.

Sharapova takes the opening set 7-5! In the end it's the most ridiculously lucky let chord that seals it and she raises her hand in apology without appearing the least bit apologetic. Her grunts are getting deeper and more drawn out with every stroke and it has certainly been a battle. She takes the set without the need for a tie-break and she'll be serving first - and hence always one step in front - in the second set.
17:37
SHARAPOVA 6-5. A well-executed deep topspin lob is alway good to see and Sharapova produces one off the backhand wing on her way to holding serve. Pironkova must come out and try and take this to a tiebreak.
17:33
SHARAPOVA 5-5. Pironkova does look to be struggling slightly. She doesn't seem to be striking the ball with any real conviction. Then again, it is windy out there and that might be throwing her off. Sharapova herself mistimes a backhand on set point and Pironkova recovers to make it 5-5.
17:28
At the change of ends Pironkova spoke to the umpire and it seems she has asked for the trainer to come on at the end of this set. It's unclear what she's struggling with.
17:26
SHARAPOVA 5-4. The number 7 seed is slowly but surely wresting control back from Pironkova, and at the perfect time as we move into the business end of this first set. A thunderous backhand winner from behind the baseline sees her move ahead for the first time in the match.

SHARAPOVA 4-4. The Russian is back in this. The meekest of second serves from Pironkova hits the net and makes it 0-15. At 15-30, Sharapova unleases two fearsome double-handed backhands to set up two break points, the second of which she manages to convert. Game on!
17:18
SHARAPOVA 3-4. Sharapova's doing her scrunched angry face a lot. This is hard going for her. She holds her serve to 30 but every shot seems like an effort and at the moment she's having to grind it out to stay on serve.
17:14
SHARAPOVA 2-4. Pironkova is not taking her foot off the gas and is continuing to make life difficult for Sharapova with some intelligent hitting that is not letting the Russian get a foothold in some of these exchanges.
17:10
SHARAPOVA 2-3. The Pironkova slice forehand is well and truly on show today. It's weird, it's ugly, but it seems to be putting Sharapova off her stride somewhat. Still, the Russian manages to hold for 2-3.
17:06
SHARAPOVA 1-3. Fantastic rally at 15-15 with both players at the net before Pironkova reaches for a volley and manages to loop it deep into the corner and out of the reach of Sharapova. Some attritional hitting brings up a few deuces but Pironkova's first serve is strong enough to see it through.
