GAME, SET AND MATCH! - WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 6-2 SAFAROVA. Williams finally seals major singles title number 20! The 33-year-old claims a sixth game on the spin with another break, this time to 15, to end Safarova's hopes and secure that third Roland Garros crown. For the first set and three quarters it was one of Serena's best displays in years, but she floundered for a while, before showing the resilience and spirit of a champion to roar back.
-
WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 5-2 SAFAROVA. The finish line is within touching distance. It's by no means routine as Safarova gives it everything to stay in it, but in the end the world number one does enough to move within one game of the title.
-
BREAK! - WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 4-2 SAFAROVA. It's four games in a row. Safarova misses the baseline at key points from 40-30 and it ends with one landing long that gives Serena a vital edge at the business-end of this match.
-
WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 3-2 SAFAROVA. A second straight love game puts Williams back in command. Has Safarova blown her big chance?
-
BREAK! - WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 2-2 SAFAROVA. The double faults are catching. An unforced error at 30-0 allows Serena back in and she heaps the pressure on to notch up break point. Lucie loses focus with a timid second serve hits the net and with it goes her break advantage. All square.
-
WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 1-2 SAFAROVA. Serena finally gets her serving mojo flowing and rattles through a hold without dropping a point. She's still in touch here and as 19 majors testify, she knows her to turn a match in her favour.
-
WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 0-2 SAFAROVA. Wow. A love hold and Lucie is suddenly on the verge of a major shock. It wouldn't just be the result, but the very nature of the turnaround if she wins this final. It's still a big IF, mind you.
-
BREAK! - WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 0-1 SAFAROVA. The Williams collapse continues. That imperious serve in the first set has now become a bit of a weakness. From 30-0 up she capitulates and loses four points on the spin, finishing with a shot wide of the right flank to put Safarova ahead for the first time in the match.
-
SET! - WILLIAMS 6-3 (2)6-7 SAFAROVA. Incredible. Safarova is back in the match! A dominant TB sees her race 3-0 and 4-2 up. A pivotal points follows with Williams in control. Safarova shows great footwork and brilliant defence to hit back and force that extra shot that Williams bullets wide of the left flank. The Czech snares the next two points and takes us into a decider that looked highly improbable 20 minutes ago.
-
Safarova storms into a 3-0 lead but then loses a sensational rally. The Czech still has the upper hand though and produces a big serve to move 4-1 up... A decider looks on likely here.
-
TIE-BREAK! - WILLIAMS 6-3 6-6 SAFAROVA. Williams is two points away at 30-15 but lets it slip and nets a forehand. Suddenly Safarova has a chance to force a third set. The Czech gets a solid return in and thunders an astonishing winner down the line on break point to secure the TB. She will not lie down!
-
BREAK! - WILLIAMS 6-3 6-5 SAFAROVA. The pendulum swings the way of Serena again. A crunching backhand winner clinches the break to 30 and she will now serve for the title.
-
WILLIAMS 6-3 5-5 SAFAROVA. Williams gets to grips with her game at just the right moment and lashes down an emphatic ace to conclude to 15 and level. Lots of loud shouting from the world number one, no doubt trying to pump herself up but also aimed at trying to intimidate Safarova.
-
WILLIAMS 6-3 4-5 SAFAROVA. It's four games in a row. The complexion of this final has completely changed. Huge pressure on Williams to hold serve now to avoid a decider. An incredible turnaround. No-one saw this coming! No-one!
-
BREAK! - WILLIAMS 6-3 4-4 SAFAROVA. Sloppy and edgy from the world number one. At 15-40 she serves another double fault and the double break disappears into thin air. Don't take anything away from Safarova, but Serena must have been counting those chickens at 4-1.
