"I can't remember if I've ever played [Kuznetsova]...I know she really enjoys the clay. That won't be an easy match," she says.

"It was very difficult," says Watson. "I think the conditions being very rainy suited her game style more than mine...In my mindset today, I just had to accept the conditions and try and adapt to it...When it's wet, the ball gets heavier and it's harder to hit winners. That's what I was having difficulty with yesterday. Today was very different."

Gibbs 7-5 2-6 2-5 Watson: Gibbs grits her teeth, frustrated at her own shot-making. Watson screams as she urges the crowd to make some more noise. They are a subdued lot. Maybe they're cold.

Gibbs 7-5 2-6 2-4 Watson: A break to love for Heather Watson, who's sending Gibbs all over the court - or at least she would be if Gibbs was even moving for some of these returns.

Gibbs 7-5 2-6 2-3 Watson: Watson did well after the rain delays yesterday and after sitting around for hours today she's doing equally well. Nicole Gibbs needs to have a think about what she can do against her doubles partner here.

These doubles partners aren't even looking at each other as they prepare for the resumption of this match.

There will be no more matches at Roland Garros today, it has just been announced. Play will recommence tomorrow at 11am GMT, 10am BST.

PLAY IS SUSPENDED. Thoughts are that they may not get on again tonight. They can play until 7pm BST but it’s very gloomy out there.

GIBBS 7-5 2-6 2-1 WATSON: Another cry of ‘come on!’ from Watson as she buries a smash to go up 15-30 before a close line call goes the American’s way. Gibbs puts away a forehand winner and again Watson doesn’t like the conditions. And off they go again… It's 40-30. So disappointing. Just as this was getting very interesting.

GIBBS 7-5 2-6 2-1 WATSON: The rain coming down a little heavier now and Watson doesn’t like it. Again allowing the rain to distract her as Gibbs forces three break points. Watson saves the first with a crosscourt winner and the American then nets a drop shot attempt but Watson dumps a volley into the net to concede the break. How disappointing!

GIBBS 7-5 2-6 1-1 WATSON: Gibbs stops the rot with a gutsy hold and glares at Watson afterwards. She’s not going to give this up easily.

GIBBS 7-5 2-6 0-1 WATSON: A superb volley on the stretch brings a cry of ‘come on!’ from Watson and she does very well to hold for 30. That’s four games on the spin now…

GIBBS 7-5 2-6 WATSON: Gibbs really being overwhelmed at the moment and a great drop shot brings up two set points. The American saves the first two but yet another perfectly executed drop shot brings another before Gibbs nets. It’s a set all!

GIBBS 7-5 2-5 WATSON: Watson really looks sharp after this rain delay. Very sharp! She races to a love game. Only a game away from levelling matters.
