GAME, SET AND MATCH! - HALEP 6-2 6-1 MERTENS. It's all over. Mertens double faults on match point to gift the world number one another break and a very routine victory. The Romanian motors into the last eight after just 59 very one-sided minutes.

BREAK! - HALEP 6-2 5-1 MERTENS. That's more like it. Mertens' pride seems to kick in and she finally turns a good situation into break opportunities. She has three bites of the cherry and gets it done on the second. It won't change the outcome of the match but she can at least make this scoreline more respectable.

BREAK! - HALEP 6-2 5-0 MERTENS. Elise looks like she just wants to get off court now. She's broken to love far too easily. Halep has been magnificent. She'll now serve for the match - and bagel.
HALEP 6-2 4-0 MERTENS. This demoralising for Mertens. She works her way into games, but Halep just raises her level. She almost toys with her opponent, seemingly offering a 0-30 start before grinding her way through four points in row to move within two games of victory.

HALEP 6-2 2-0 MERTENS. Elise works her way towards a half chance at 15-30, but Simona slams the door shut. The world number one's shows no mercy as she motors through from a tricky situation to consolidate.

BREAK! - HALEP 6-2 1-0 MERTENS. A new set - but same old story. Mertens looks devoid of belief as Halep goes for the jugular and gets off to a flyer in Set 2.

SET! - HALEP 6-2 MERTENS. Impressive tennis from Halep. She looks so assured as she serves out the opening set to 15 in just 35 minutes. The world number one appears to be cruising into the last eight - what can Mertens do to make it more interesting?

BREAK! - HALEP 5-2 MERTENS. The Belgian is left frustrated. Halep's sheer persistence is hard to shrug off. A super backhand up line puts the No.16 seed 40-30 to the good, but Simona comes roaring back to up the heat from deuce. She snares another break point and converts with a lovely drop-shot-clinical pass up the line combo.
HALEP 4-2 MERTENS. Halep has been the more consistent player so far. She remains composed and in control.
HALEP 3-2 MERTENS. The occasional service wobbles are making life tricky for Mertens, but she manages to stay in touch with a hold from deuce.

BREAK! - HALEP 2-1 MERTENS. Elise looks in control at 30-0 and 40-30, but Halep senses blood and ups the ante. The Romanian has three separate break points and eventually wears her opponent down to make the breakthrough in what proved to be a very lengthy game.

HALEP 1-1 MERTENS. A very confident opener for Halep too. She rattles through an efficient love hold.
HALEP 0-1 MERTENS. A solid opener for Mertens. She notches a classy opening point and benefits from a basic error from Halep to banish any early nerves and get on the board with a game to 15.

The players have only met once before. Halep won 6-0 6-3 in Madrid earlier this year.
