Afternoon all! We've got ourselves a real mix here. Madison Keys is a natural, one of the strongest and calmest players in the game; Yulia Putintseva is a force of nature, with a temper to match. It's hard to see Keys not winning this, but if Putitnseva can start well, she'll be hard to stop.

Putintseva is a gamer but at 40-30 Keys spanks down a brute of a serve, wide to the backhand, and the number 13 seed is into the semye-finals. There, she'll play either Daria Kasatkina or her big pal Sloane Stephens, who beat here in the US open final. That should be a jazzer, so definitely be joining us for that.

And there it is. Keys breaks, and needs only two more games to move on. Putitnseva hasbn't got close to her serve in this set, and she keeps the heid this match will shortly be over.

We're still on serve in the second set, but Keys still looks likely to find what she needs at some point.

It's taken longer than usual but Putintseva is jawing at the umpire, who gets out of his chair to explain that there's a mark she's unable or refusing to see. She stomps through a hold easily enough though.

Putintseva is first in with the mini-break but Keys quickly retorts and takes her own. Putintseva then redeems it, but a monstrous forehand down the line gives Keys two set-points; she loses the first via unfriendly net-cord, but constructs the second beautifully, opening the space for a booming backhand pass. She didn't play a brilliant set, but just had that extra bit when she needed it.

Keys gets herself two set-points but can't take either, creating the angle for a forehand winner with the second only to net. Putintseva punishes her, and we have ourselves a tie-break.

Keys is hot all of a sudden, and I'd put money on her breaking again here.

Keys gets herself to 0-30 and opens the court for a forehand winner ... only to blaze it wide. But she plays a fine point next, clearing a path to the net with her forehand before sticking the ball away, then punishing a forehand down the line for the break-back!

Putintseva will have to serve for it; Keys will be swinging.

Putintseva consolidates and Keys must now serve to stay in the set, and if she does, break back to stay in the set. The latter has not looked at all likely so far.

Putintseva earns the first break-point of the match and Keys, looking to attack, whams a forehand into the net. Putintseva is looking solid as you like so far.

Neither player is able to exert pressure on their opponent's serve so far, which is to say that Putintseva has started really well.

A thumping service game from Keys who takes the momentum and starts attacking Putintseva off the ground. She looks the far better player in the exchanges, but Putintseva isn't messing about and holds easily enough - but so does Keys.

A simple hold for Putintseva, who looks very comfy out there already.

It's not an easy hold for Keys, but she achieves it to 30.
