Kyrgios was docked a point for his bad language after swearing audibly at 3-2 down in the second set.
Furious, Kyrgios rounded on the umpire to deny having used bad language - yet as he did so he compounded the situation by using an obscenity in his complaint saying "What the f*** just happened?"
"Please, Nick, stop using F-words, please," said the umpire.
"I didn't say anything mate," came Kyrgios's angry reply.
The umpire then told Kyrgios he had been overheard by one of the officials who had given a report to the chair, and tried to calm things down by asserting that being strict on swearing was part of the umpire's job.
The world number 27 was not impressed: he accused the umpire of "making s*** up" and then added, "I don't want to play any more, this is just bulls***".
“One more bad thing happens and I’m not playing,” he concluded.
Kyrgios did carry on playing, but not for long: seven games later his tournament was over, the 24th seed losing to the unheralded Spaniard to make an early exit.
The Australian was already embroiled in controversy before even turning up at Indian Wells having been accused by Bernard Tomic of faking injury in order to sit out Australia's recent Davis Cup match against the USA.
