SOCK v THIEM The US Open champion has to do it the hard way at Roland Garros… and that shows with Thiem’s second-round opponent this afternoon. Jack Sock. Once a world No 8, now ranked 310, but don’t let that ranking fool you.

Sock leads 4-2 at the changeover and then brings up three set points at 6-3… Thiem has two serves to put the pressure on, and the Austrian saves the first set point, and the second, and Sock is then unable to convert the third on his own serve and it’s 6-6!

Thiem then takes to next two points to seal the match! Five points in a row there… and he seals his safe passage to the third round, and saved a set’s worth of energy in the process.

To a tie-break we go! Can Sock force a fourth or will Thiem wrap it up in three?

Sock fights back again! Thiem was 40-15 up on serve but the American goes on to win the next four points and bring it back level.

Sock was able to break back in this set but Thiem has motored ahead once more, with another break moving the Austrian within two games of victory.

An early break in the third has Thiem in control and close to reaching the third round in style here in Paris.

Sock put up a stiffer challenge in that second set but a crucial break in the eighth is followed by Thiem eventually serving it out in the ninth when converting his third set point.

The Austrian, like Nadal, is now two sets up and looking comfortable.

A long eighth game with four deuces eventually goes Thiem’s way as he converts his third break point to move within a game of the second set.

Still on serve in the second here and Sock is putting in a far stronger performance, not offering Thiem a break opportunity… yet.

Three break points, three breaks for Thiem and the Austrian races to a one-set lead over Sock after just 26 minutes.

We said it would be tough… but Thiem secures a break in the opening game and he goes on to consolidate that a game later.
