Djokovic seals the match with a break! Another straight sets win for the Serbian and it’s an 11th quarter-final in a row at the French Open!
Not as easy as the scoreline may suggest, but for Djokovic it was the perfect match really as he had to move up a gear from the routine wins in previous rounds.

Talk about stepping it up. Djokovic has a spring in his step and it enables him to hold at a canter. Now just a game away from victory, the Serbian.

Khachanov was seemingly on top in this set but typically it is the world No 1 who breaks at the second opportunity. Sums Djokovic up really, just when you think you have him sussed, he breaks with a roar of a celebration knowing he’s just two games away from victory.

Arguably the shot of the match from Djokovic as a running cross-court forehand evades Khachanov.
The Serbian brings up two game points with that winner, but he is pegged back to deuce by the Russian.
And what’s this… break point! Khachanov looks pumped, but it’s Djokovic who saves it with a risky drop shot which Khachanov reaches but cannot get back over.
Djokovic goes wide with a routine forehand, another break point for Khachanov… which again Djokovic saves after a great serve. Two points later, he gets over the line with a battling hold.

Just the tonic after that break back – a hold to 15 for Khachanov, who makes it three games in a row!
He roars his way back to the seat and the Chatrier crowd applaud the fact this match may not over soon after all…

Khachanov doing his best to stay in this match and he actually ends up bringing up break point when Djokovic sends a backhand into the net.
He’s 1/6 on break point, Khachanov, but make that 2/7!
He wins the backhand exchange as Djokovic goes into the net again.

A second break would put Khachanov on the brink of defeat, but he digs in to hold to 30 – Djokovic just looks to the skies there knowing he had a chance to force deuce before going just long.

DJOKOVIC 6-4 6-3 2-0* KHACHANOV
And then no such problems on serve for Djokovic, who holds to 15 before keeping himself energised with a little jig while Khachanov looks despondent.

Khachanov first to serve in this third set, and in his bid to stay ahead the 15th seed ultimately fails… Ruthless from Djokovic who smells blood and breaks after forcing deuce.

That’s the best hold all set – to 15 – and it’s enough to hand Djokovic a dominant two-set lead over the Russian.
Surely no way back for Khachanov…

DJOKOVIC 6-4 *5-3 KHACHANOV
After Khachanov fails to convert four break points in the pervious game, Djokovic races to a 0-40 lead and with it three set points.
Khachanov saves the first, and Djokovic then goes long on the second… and cannot get a drop shot back over on the third… He then hits the net with his racket in frustration and that leads to a few jeers from the crowd.
Another set point comes up, but Djokovic slices a forehand into the net and he looks towards his corner almost asking them why he played that shot.
This time it’s Khachanov who cannot convert from advantage, but he does so at the second time of asking after saving four set points.

DJOKOVIC 6-4 5-2* KHACHANOV
Now then… Djokovic loose with a double fault then wayward forehand and it’s 0-40. Three break points for Khachanov – he goes wide on the first, and then misses the second when chasing down a Djokovic lob… and the third? Saved again by Djokovic, with a fierce forehand down the line.
A net cord sends the ball long and it’s a fourth break point for Khachanov, and again he cannot convert, sending his return long!
A big ol’ yell from Khachanov as he places a simple enough forehand into the net, and Djokovic then wins the next point to hold.

Could not help but think back to the US Open after this, but a very different scenario this time around...

DJOKOVIC 6-4 *4-2 KHACHANOV
Khachanov trying to force the issue a little too much and Djokovic takes the Russian to deuce.
A poor drop shot from Djokovic – a seventh of this set – hands Khachanov the advantage, and he ends up holding following some solid defence.

DJOKOVIC 6-4 4-1* KHACHANOV
Some entertaining points, first one which Khachanov wins with a swipe down the line, but a tweener can only find Djokovic’s racket, who simply volleys to win the next point.
Another hold for Djokovic.

And just like that Djokovic gets the break. Keeping up with the Serbian takes so much energy, and this time Khachanov just drops his level and a few errors help Djokovic break to 15.

DJOKOVIC 6-4 2-1* KHACHANOV
A hold to 30 for Djokovic this time but he is being made to work hard out there. Quite easily the toughest test he has faced so far at Roland Garros.
15:54
DJOKOVIC 6-4 *1-1 KHACHANOV
Another hard-fought game as Djokovic rallies from 40-15 to force deuce on Khachanov’s serve.
But it’s a good hold in the end from the 15th seed, who gratefully watches Djokovic go long. A shake of the head from the Serbian.

DJOKOVIC 6-4 1-0* KHACHANOV
Khachanov recovers from dropping serve to lose that first set by taking Djokovic to deuce on the Serbian’s serve, but normal service is resumed as the world No 1 takes the next two points.

Not phased by that break back, Djokovic sends down a forehand winner to move 15-30 in front on Khachanov’s serve. He then earns two set points and converts the first after a Khachanov double fault! Poor way to end a tight set, but it’s the world No 1 who motors ahead.
