French Open 2023 quarter final as it happened: Carlos Alcaraz sets Novak Djokovic clash with emphatic win over Stefanos Tsitsipas

An astonishing display on Philippe-Chatrier saw Carlos Alcaraz move on at the 2023 French Open and he will now face Novak Djokovic in a blockbuster semi-final.

That IS a statement performance from Carlos Alcaraz as he sets up a heavyweight semi-final showdown with Novak Djokovic courtesy of an enthralling demolition of the World No.5 and 2021 finalist, Tsitsipas.

The Greek fought back late in the day but on the whole he was run ragged and beaten off court in two hours and 12 minutes.

Alcaraz had the chance to break for the match and then failed to serve it out at the first attempt, but he responded to the set back in style and took the breaker by a 7-5 scoreline on his sixth MP.

The Spaniard targets a high bounce to the Tsitsipas backhand and it pays off with real dividends.

The top seed’s best point is a fierce forehand up the line and it secures the mini break early on to separate them at the change of ends.

This is a much more composed Tsitsipas and he has no doubt been buoyed by a dip from Alcaraz right at the end.

The Greek blasts through a game to 15 with some sharp tennis and secures a spot in a third-set tie break that never looked like being on the cards.

Alcaraz crushes a forehand winner on the run right down the line and then lets out a big ‘Vamos!’ as he responds to the disappointment of not finishing the job off with a rampant love hold.

It’s all square! Tsitsipas is not going down without a fight after all. Alcaraz lashes a stunning backhand up the line to earn his third match point but clutch serving drag the Greek into the sanctuary of deuce and from there he shows a steely focus that has been missing for 98 per cent of the match, to dig out the hold.

Alcaraz blots his copybook as he appears to get tight right at the death.

Stef hits a shocker of a backhand on the first of two break points that would even make a below average club player grimace, but he manages to convert on the second with a rasping low strike to his opponent’s feet that the Spaniard can only drop volley wide.

The crowd burst into applause as Tsitsipas fends off two match points and poses a serve-out question to the 20-year-old with a resilient hold from deuce.

The World No.5 picks up a drop short to force a lob he is able to reach and emphatically smash away.

The crowd respond to try and give him the push he needs at 30-30 and then at deuce, but Alcaraz is having none of it.

The top seed slaps down a clutch wide serve and it’s swiftly followed by a wide ace – his third of the contest – to move him within a game of the last four.

It’s a rare, loose return game from Carlitos and Stef is delighted to mop up some cheap points, concluding a game to 15 with a neat disguise on a drop shot.

How do you compete with that? Alcaraz scorches a huge forehand to send Tsitsipas deep into his forehand wing and then follows up with a drop shot from deep with the Greek miles away from getting anywhere near it.

Stef had won the opening point of the game by coming out on top in a hard-fought 16-shot rally, but he was outclassed again after that as Charlie reeled off four points in a row.

He’s on the board! Tsitsipas is so relieved to see a backhand up the line just miss the baseline and he finally has some respite with a game to 30.

The crowd roar and get right behind him. He responds, shaking his head to suggest he can’t believe what’s happening and raises both hands in the air to soak up a rare, positive moment.

One person who isn’t smiling is Tsitsipas. This is a chastening experience and it doesn’t look like it will last much longer. Alcaraz marauds to a clean hold to back up the break and has the semi finals already in his sights.

A large number of spectators on Chatrier begin to chant:

‘Tsitsipas… Tsitsipas… Tsitsipas…’

They want to see more of a battle and at first it looks like the Greek is ready to respond as he charges to a 40-15 lead.

However, a couple of careless errors give Alcaraz a half chance, which he inevitably takes by picking up a drop shot and slipping it to the right of the bamboozled Greek.
