French Open 2023 final result: Iga Swiatek wins her third Roland Garros title against unseeded Czech Karolina Muchova

She’s done it! Iga Swiatek wins her third Roland Garros title – and her fourth Grand Slam – as she comes up with the goods right at the end, breaking the Czech to 15 to claim victory on her first match point in two hours and 46 minutes.

It was a sad way for it to end for the battling Czech, who double faulted on MP but she can take huge credit for a brilliant run at this year's tournament that will propel her up the rankings.

Muchova sweeps a forehand wide and it's 15-40....

It’s significant, especially when Swiatek lashes a forehand long, but she recovers immediately to make deuce and more clutch serving digs her out of what was looking like a rather large hole.

Muchova will now serve to stay in it.

Swiatek comes rampaging back with some heavy hitting to earn two break points, but Muchova corks a wide ace to get to deuce before undoing all of the hard work to try and edge towards that finish line.

Iga guides a volley away for a third chance and Karolina has a brain-freeze with a drop shot that barely makes the net.

It’s the World No.1 who blinks first – but will it be fatal?

Iga makes life difficult for herself with a double fault and an unforced error to open. Muchova takes full advantage, producing a drop-shot/volley combo to snare break points before forcing the error on her first opportunity to hit the front.

That’s an important settler from Muchova as she holds to 15.

This match is so finely poised right now. It’s getting close to the business end with the title on the line. Who will blink first?

That’s the mark of a champion – but will she end up as one come the end of today?

Swiatek has moved through the gears rather sharply since falling 0-2 down and she surges through a clinical hold love here to wrestle the scoreboard momentum her way with a third game on the run.

Swiatek unleashes a backhand pass down the line that clips the net and evades Muchova at the net.

The Czech’s slice continually resets Swiatek’s attacks but she then balloons an attempted pass and coughs up tripe break point.

Swiatek can’t make it count on her first but picks off a drop shot on the second to level the set.

Iga digs out the hold to 15 despite a terrible volley at the net that Muchova punished with a clinical pass.

The reigning champion is on the board but is very much playing catch up in this deciding set.

Karolina is on fire right now! The World No.43 lands aces four and five to consolidate with a love hold.

The World No.1 is wobbling away out there.

Muchova looks like the player with two Roland Garros under her belt as she races to her right and unleashes a brilliant crosscourt forehand pass to conjure up triple break point.

Swiatek has no answer and double faults to gift the Czech a break to love.

We are going the distance! Muchova battles back from 0-30 to serve out on a third set point from deuce, but it takes the best tennis of the match for her to do so.

The point of the contest comes at another face-off at deuce after Swiatek had dominated with her forehand to swat away a 2nd BP. Both players show incredible agility to reach balls that look dead, but it’s the Czech who edges it with some magnificent coverage of the net.

There’s another twist as Muchova hits freely and dominates a surprisingly passive Iga.

A bullet Muchova forehand up the line has Chris Evert gasping in delight on Eurosport Comms but from there it’s all about Iga’s travails as she sandwiches a rushed backhand into the net between two wayward crosscourt strikes to drop serve once again.

Muchova will now try to serve the set out for a second time.

That’s a shocker from Karolina. She feels the stress of serving it out, firing two backhand errors into the tramlines and slapping a miscued forehand way wide to cough up break back points.

Swiatek just stays solid, keeping the ball in court and Muchova eventually buckles with a stray backhand slice.

Hold the phone! Swiatek capitulates after somehow dragging herself level from 0-30 down. The Pole miscues a horrible forehand long before double faulting on break point to hand the game to Karolina.

The Czech will now serve for the set!

The Czech hits the postage stamp with a fabulous forehand winner up the line and fires off another winner before resisting an Iga fight back to level once again with a game to 30.
