Zverev looks to up the ante with a sublime crosscourt forehand winner and then his eyes light up as Dimi fires unforced errors No.46 and No.47 to offer up triple break point.

The Bulgarian saves two, firing a stunning winner from way off court on one of them, but a sixth double fault sums his night up on the third.

Zverev will now serve for the match.

A fourth ace is quickly followed by a seventh double fault, but Zverev doesn’t have a chance to get twitchy as Dimitrov fails to hit the court on the next two points to allow the German to go on and claim a comfortable game to nudge the board.

Ouch. Dimitrov lashes a forehand against the top of the tape and watches the ball balloon beyond the baseline. It concludes a break to love and once again, in the blink of an eye, a promising position turns sour for the Bulgarian.

Well, you could forgive Dimitrov for thinking it’s not going to be his day. A sloppy, lacklustre opener was followed by a collapse from 4-2 up in Set 2 – and now this.

Zverev lulls badly and double faults to cough up triple break point. The German hustles hard to swat away two but then gets very lucky with allow forehand that clips the top of the net and somehow bobbles. It’s clutch work from there as the German uses up another of his nine lives to earn the scoreboard advantage.

Talk about being your own worst enemy. Dimitrov appears to crumble as he loses his 14th points on the spin to cough up triple set point. The Bulgarian dips deep to save all three and then a fourth from deuce, but he can’t find the consistency he needs to plot an escape route and a slice into the net hands Zverev a two-set lead on the German’s fifth opportunity.

Zverev crashes down a second ace of the match as he rides the adrenalin rush of that break back through a rampant love hold.

Dimitrov was doing all of the attacking and dictating but now he’s suddenly serving to stay in the set.

The feeling of a change in the air just became tangible as Dimitrov dictates with that wand of a forehand, breaking to 15 with a sharp pass up the lien that Sascha can only divert into the middle of the net. Match ON!
