British number three Naomi Broady fell at the first hurdle in her attempts to qualify for the main draw of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
The 24-year-old from Stockport lost a tight first-round encounter with American Alicia Black 7-6(8) 7-6(7).
With barely anything to separate the players, both sets were decided by tie-breaks with Broady, behind just Heather Watson and Johanna Konta in the British women's rankings, narrowly losing out in each.
In the men's draw, there was further disappointment for Britain with Daniel Cox going down 6-3 6-3 to Serbia's Filip Krajinovic.
Cox, ranked sixth in Britain, had little answer to the player seeded third in the qualifying tournament, leaving British hopes resting with Daniel Smethurst, James Ward and Daniel Evans to join Andy Murray in the main men's draw.
