GAME, SET AND MATCH! - MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 6-2 KOEPFER. The No.2 seed and 2019 finalist rolls on as he breaks on his third match point to seal a comprehensive straight sets victory in just one hour and 48 minutes. He will meet Pablo Andujar in round three.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 5-2 KOEPFER. Same old story. The gigantic serve and strength and consistency off both flanks prove simply irresistible again. Med moves within a game of victory.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 4-2 KOEPFER. The German delays what feels like the inevitable a bit longer with a plucky service game. He avoids another breadstick at least, but he doesn’t look likely to ruffle the Russian’s feathers.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 4-1 KOEPFER. Dominik produces a sublime passing shot to make 30-30 but Med responds with a third huge serve to re-assert his authority before a drive down the line proves too hot handle.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 3-1 KOEPFER. More encouragement from the crowd for Koepfer as he belatedly gets on the board. He has the gait of a man who knows his fate.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 3-0 KOEPFER. A fourth ace sees Daniil consolidate with complete ease. Koepfer forces the Russian to make an error on the volley mid-way through the game and gets a huge cheer of encouragement from the crowd. They know he’s playing second fiddle here.
BREAK! - MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 2-0 KOEPFER. The Koepfer resistance is fading fast. He’s been broken in his opening service game of a set for the third straight time and the Russian’s charge to round three looks unlikely to face much of an obstacle in the shape of this German.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 1-0 KOEPFER. Blink and you’d have missed it. Med’s surge continues.
SET! - MEDVEDEV 6-4 6-1 KOEPFER. Too easy. It’s all going the No.2 seed’s way now. He breaks once again and easily claims a two-set lead via a tasty breadstick.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 5-1 KOEPFER. My word, that could well be the volley of the tournament. Medvedev appears to give up on a poor shot that lands mid-court with Koepfer charging in. The Russian suddenly decides to go for the German’s pass and improvises with a reach behind his back to flip a backhand volley beyond him for a winner. It even has the world number 57 smiling.
BREAK! - MEDVEDEV 6-4 4-1 KOEPFER. The world number two looks to be increasing his levels while Koepfer’s frustration is leading to more errors. It’s a recipe that can only mean one thing and that’s a double break.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 3-1 KOEPFER. The towering Russian’s patterns continue to outfox his opponent. The deep groundstrokes pushing him from side to side are luring the errors when the big serve doesn’t just clock up a cheap point or two.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 2-1 KOEPFER. The German stays in touch but is going to need to raise his level if he’s to have any chance of making Daniil sweat here.
MEDVEDEV 6-4 2-0 KOEPFER. Strong and solid. It sums up the basis of Medvedev’s game. Koepfer can’t make inroads from 15-30 and the Russian comes through to consolidate.
BREAK! - MEDVEDEV 6-4 1-0 KOEPFER. Dominik wears an anguished expression and bitterly mutters away to himself as he follows the pattern from Set 1 where he was broken in the opening game. Medvedev sinks his teeth in a 15-40 and although the German saves both BPs he can’t shake the No.2 seed off.
