But the Russian once again is superior on the defensive side of the game and eventually turns that into attack, producing a backhand winner down the line for a passing shot. And just one forehand winner later and the Russian has a first match point. The chance goes astray with an inside out forehand wide but she gets another when Petkovic dumps a forehand return into the net

Petkovic staves off the bagel with a cracking cross court forehand approach shot that goes for a winner (that's more like it) as she holds to 15. But Zvonareva will serve for the match next and will have two attempts to do so

Petkovic squanders a great chance to earn herself break back points when another of her forehands ends up drifting long of the baseline and Zvonareva goes on to hold, after yet another forehand long. It's another straightforward game for the Russian and Petkovic will have to serve to stay in this match after the change of ends

BREAK! Petkovic saves a first break point in this game with a forehand volley winner into the open court, despite some ridiculous defence from Zvonareva. A double fault on the second is a woeful way to give away your serve but that's exactly what Petkovic does. You have to feel a little sorry for the German here today, she is beatign herself and is capable of so much better than this

Finally something for Petkovic to get hold off as she outlasts Zvonareva in a lengthy rally, winning it with a cross court forehand winner on the angle. But it's only a temporary respite as the Russian earns herself a game point with a reaction forehand volley winner before winning with another forehand winner of her own. And that consolidates the break in this second set

BREAK! Petkovic sends another foerhand long of the baseline. She challenges but hawkeye shows the ball did indeed land long and Zvonareva has two more break points. Petkovic saves the first with a cracking first serve that the Russian can only return back into the net. But Zvonareva does get the break at the second attempt when Petkovic once again hits into the net, this time off the backhand wing

SET! Another forehand into the net from Petkovic hands Zvonareva three set points. The first goes begging when the German finally comes up with a second winner, a forehand across court. But normal service resumes on the next point and Petkovic dumps a forehand into the net and Zvonareva takes a very speedy first set in just 24 minutes

Two forehands into the net by Petkovic, followed by an ace down the centre of the court brings up three more game points for Zvonareva. And she goes on to hold when the German sends another forehand long of the baseline. Petkovic can't even buy a forehand at the moment and she will have to serve to stay in this first set

Much better from the German as she holds to 15 to get off the mark in this match, sealing her first game when Zvonareva dumps a forehand return of serve into the net. Still just the one winner from Petkovic though and that'll need to change dramatically

Zvonareva races through another solid service hold to consolidate the double break and this match is yet to get going in anyway really. The crowd haven't been shown anything to get involved in and Petkovic's ground-strokes continue to go astray
